Pieve Torina: Waterways, Mills and Living History

Pieve Torina combines the Sentiero delle Acque with protected landscapes and evidence of faith, craftsmanship and rural life. The townscape includes paths along the water, historic buildings, museums and local traditions.

Exploring the Waterways

The Sentiero delle Acque is a combined cycling and walking trail approximately 4.3 km long. Its sections consist of gravel and compacted earth; at the same time, the trail is considered suitable for all age groups. Access is via the SP 96, just outside the centre of Pieve Torina. Near the entrance there is a large car park for cars, buses, bicycles and mopeds. The Percorso Kneipp is also located near the Sant’Angelo stream, a nature-based and sensory attraction opened in 2023. Along a short section, you walk through the water over various surfaces.

Landscape and Historic Routes

The Torricchio Nature Reserve lies within the municipality of Pieve Torina, covers 317 hectares and was the first protected area in the Marche region. Its landscape consists of pastures, meadows and forests. The Ponte Romano marked an ancient branch of the Via Flaminia towards Camerino and the Adriatic Sea. The stone structure is considered stable and well preserved.

Churches and Sacred History

The Pieve di Santa Maria dates back to the 11th century and preserves several frescoes attributed to Cola di Pietro inside. It is temporarily closed due to earthquake damage. The Eremo Santuario di Sant’Angelo in Prefoglio is also currently inaccessible due to earthquake damage. The sanctuary is also known as the Eremo dei Santi. It was founded by Benedictines in the 12th century and stands above a cave that has been considered sacred since pre-Christian times.

Mills and Museums

In the medieval Mulino di Fiume, two stone millstones continue to be powered by the water of a waterfall at the adjacent pond. The mill was one of five mills in Pieve Torina and processed more than 700 quintals of grain annually. The Museo della Nostra Terra reconstructs the settings of farmhouses and craft workshops so that visitors can learn about rural life in times gone by; it also offers a guided and immersive experience. The medieval Complesso Sant’Agostino houses an ethnographic museum with more than 5,000 objects relating to the rural way of life of the Alto Maceratese.

Community and Local Tradition

The Mattoncinoteca4All® di Heart4Children APS – Sede di Pieve Torina offers inclusive workshops and communal creative activities using building blocks. In the hamlet of Appennino, which belongs to Pieve Torina, stands the Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo, with two naves and a precious Pietà painting from 1543. The Pianta Maggio is also associated there with a local spring festival tradition involving rituals and social gatherings.
