Esanatoglia: History, Trails and the Sources of the Esino

Esanatoglia combines a townscape shaped by history with trails through the landscape along the Esino. Between the town wall, churches, springs and mountain ranges, you will find various starting points for an individual trip to Italy: culture, hiking, mountain biking, wildlife observation and regional specialities stand alongside one another as distinct themes.

Historical traces in the townscape

The historic centre of Esanatoglia is still surrounded by a castle wall, bordered by the Esino River. The Porta di Sant’Andrea dates from the 14th century and is an ancient gate to the historic centre. Among the oldest religious buildings is the Pieve di Santa Anatolia, a Romanesque church. The former monastery and the church of Santa Maria Maddalena date from the 13th century. Also connected with the town’s medieval history is the old watchtower known as “lu Roccone”: it was once part of the 14th-century town wall of Santa Anatolia.

Another historical detail is the Fonte del Borgo, which is also known as the Fonte di San Martino. The still-functioning facility dates from the 12th century and has separate basins for people and animals. Villa Varano contains the fresco “The Angel of Peace”, which was honoured in 2020 as the region of Marche’s “Opera di Pace”. Esanatoglia’s traditional crafts include reproductions of the antique Renaissance ceramics of Santa Anatolia.

Hiking trails to the sources of the Esino

The Parco Sorgenti Esino route is 9 kilometres long, classified as having tourist difficulty, and leads from Esanatoglia to the sources of the Esino. Near the sources, a hiking, cycling and mountain-biking trail follows the river’s main course and leads to the Eremo di San Pietro. The ruins of the old San Pietro church are less than a minute’s walk from the trail to the sources of the Esino.

For a more demanding hike, the CAI route IT 6.12 is available with an E–EE rating. It covers 5.2 kilometres and has an ascent of 380 metres. Its gorge section leads to the last accessible waterfall and is recommended only for experienced hikers. As part of the Esatrail project, a free hiking and mountain-biking map is available at an information board along the route. The Le Vene nature trail can be explored on foot or by mountain bike.

Mountains, nature and special interests

Esanatoglia has a protected floristic reserve with Mediterranean, hill and mountain plant species as well as numerous wild animals. The Eremo di San Cataldo is located at an altitude of 766 metres on Monte Corsegno. Nearby Monte Gemmo has a launch site for paragliding and hang-gliding; during the flight, the view extends as far as Esanatoglia.

The Osservatorio Astronomico is located in the Crossodromo complex on Monte Porro. The Crossodromo Gina Libani Repetti is one of Italy’s oldest motocross tracks. Galattica also adds a special highlight: the festival takes place annually around Castello Malcavalca and includes talks, workshops and activities.
