Montefano Among Hills and Panoramic Views
Montefano is situated on a gentle hill between the valleys of the Fiumicello and Menocchia rivers. From here, views extend as far as the Sibillini Mountains, Monte Conero and the Adriatic Sea.
A Corso with a Theatre and Palaces
Via Carradori, Montefano’s corso, brings together the theatre, square and palaces in an elegant architectural ensemble. Teatro La Rondinella has its origins in the late 18th century; its present form dates from 1887. Also noteworthy is the use of cast iron in the box-front railings and structural elements of the theatre. It is considered a unique example in the Marche.

Churches, Art and Marcello Cervini
The relics of Sant’Onorio and San Saverio are kept in the Collegiata San Donato. The same church houses a valuable painting by an unknown artist depicting San Donato and San Giovanni Nepomucemo on either side of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Casa Natale Papa Marcello II is the house where Marcello Cervini was born on 6 May 1501.
The brief tenure of the future pope is also part of Montefano’s history: Marcello Cervini became Pope Marcello II in 1555 and remained in office for 22 days. Together with Casa Natale and the Collegiata, this creates a historical focal point where religious art, local history and a remarkable biography stand side by side.
Green Spaces in the Centre and South-West of the Town
The Giardini da Bora are located within Montefano’s historic centre. This very scenic green space has a kiosk where visitors can rest and stop for refreshments. South-west of the town, Parco Veragra encompasses a large green area. It is home to the old and restored Fonte Torciano or Fonte Ckiara, which, together with other springs, is mentioned in the 14th-century Statuti Osimani. Crafts, Culinary Delights and Festival Traditions
The Fiera dei Sapori d’Autunno takes place every year in October and is dedicated to local handicrafts as well as local food and wine products. The Palio delle Contrade takes place in July, bringing Montefano’s period of splendour back to life. These two events have different focuses: October represents regional products and crafts, while July places the festival tradition of the Contrade at the centre.
The San Filippo Complex
Today’s Chiesa di San Filippo Benizi was consecrated in 1703 and dedicated to San Filippo Benizi. The Museo di Arte Sacra has been established in the grottoes beneath the San Filippo complex. The church, grottoes and museum therefore form another cultural and historical point of interest for anyone wishing to experience sacred architecture and art together during their stay.
