Borgiano among vineyards and Monte Letegge

Today, the village lies on the slope of a spur of Monte Letegge.

Historical traces in the village

The ancient castle of Borgiano is now a small village. Within the built-up centre of the Borgiano district stands the Chiesa di San Giuseppe, which dates from the 18th century. However, the history of the village goes back further: Borgiano can be traced back to the year 1240. In a document by Sinibaldo Fieschi, the village was known at that time by the Latin name Borianum.

The Chiesa di San Paolo stands on the site of the ancient castle and dates back to the 13th century. At the same time, its history includes a more recent, momentous event: the church suffered severe structural damage in the 2016 earthquake, including the collapse of the upper part of the façade. The origins of the Chiesa di San Paolo in the 13th century and the damage caused in 2016 therefore belong to two different points in its history.

Monte Letegge and its special habitats

Monte Letegge is a Site of Community Importance, or SCI, selected for the conservation of its natural habitat. The mountain's landscapes include extensive pastures that were formerly managed, as well as thermophilous low woodlands on the slopes. The submontane pastures are known for their rich orchid populations. At Monte Letegge, open pastures and thermophilous low woodlands on the slopes exist side by side as distinct landscape forms. The orchid populations are associated with the submontane pastures.

Routes between the lake and vineyards

Lago di Caccamo is also important for orientation around Borgiano. It is also known as Lago di Borgiano and Lago di Pievefavera, as it borders the two corresponding districts. The lake is used mainly for fishing and is also suitable for canoeing. The circular route “Attraverso i vigneti” begins at Lago di Caccamo and passes through Borgiano and Borgianello.

“Attraverso i vigneti” leads through hills characterised by vineyards. Along the way, you will encounter wineries producing Vernaccia di Serrapetrona.

Another route is called “Serrapetrona: in vetta al monte letegge (3° variante)”. It crosses the high pastures of Monte Letegge and then descends to the Borgiano district. This provides two distinct landscape profiles for individual planning: “Attraverso i vigneti” links the lake, Borgiano, Borgianello, vineyard-covered hills and wineries, while the Monte Letegge variant descends from the high pastures to the Borgiano district.

Borgianello and views across the landscape

Borgianello offers spectacular views of Parco dei Monti Azzurri. Borgianello is therefore both a section of the vineyard circular route and the starting point for views of Parco dei Monti Azzurri.
