Palazzo Pallotta stands in the center of Caldarola and, together with the Collegiata di San Martino, forms an important building complex. The palazzo is a clear example of a Mannerist interpretation of Renaissance architecture. In its Stanza del Paradiso, you will encounter depictions of exotic flora and fauna as well as hunting scenes with rearing horses, greyhounds and hunters. Castello Pallotta also includes a carriage room, saddle rooms and weapons.
Castles, Churches and Art
Castello Pallotta was built on a hill in the second half of the 9th century. Toward the end of the 16th century, Cardinal Evangelista Pallotta fundamentally altered the complex and converted it into a summer residence. The walls, the Guelph crenellation, the battlements and a drawbridge have been preserved. Castello Pievefavera also combines different historical layers: it was built in the 13th century and later restored.
The sacred works of art include the valuable fresco cycle in the Cappella di Santa Maria della Croce, featuring the enthroned Madonna and Child as well as Saints Paul, Joseph, Sebastian and Roch. The 16th-century chapel is located on the provincial road at Lago di Caccamo, opposite the entrance to the Pievefavera cemetery. Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta a Pievefavera was built in the 12th century. Its Baroque appearance features a round-arched portal and early medieval decorations; its churchyard houses an open-air antiquarium.
The fortified districts complement this picture. Castello di Croce is a fortification in the da Varano tradition, with a pointed-arch entrance leading into a small courtyard with a cistern. It contains works by Nobile da Lucca as well as frescoes by Andrea, Simone and Federico De Magistris. Castello di Vestignano preserves strong defensive walls, an imposing cylindrical tower, square-plan towers and narrow lanes inside. It also contains an exceptional collection of murals, with works by Simone De Magistris, Andrea De Magistris and Nobile da Lucca.
Castello di Vestignano includes the preserved remains of a temple dedicated to Saint George and associated with the Lombards of the 8th century. These include paintings and a 13th-century sculpture of Saint Martin. The Teatro Comunale has a horseshoe-shaped floor plan, two tiers with boxes and a gallery. It is currently in operation and can be visited during theatrical events.
Lago di Pievefavera and Historic Routes
Castello Pievefavera is surrounded by hills covered with olive trees that gradually slope down toward Lago di Pievefavera. The lake is an artificial reservoir created in 1954 to supply electricity to the surrounding towns. Lago di Pievefavera, also known as Lago di Caccamo or Lago di Borgiano, is frequently used for sport fishing because of its abundant fish population. It is also used for rowing, and numerous regattas take place there throughout the year.
Le vie dei castelli offers a way to explore the landscape on foot. The route begins in the center of Caldarola and passes through the districts of Vestignano, Croce, Pievefavera and Valcimarra. The Sentieri Storici Partigiani run through the hills, forests and ridges of Caldarola and are connected with the history of the Resistance during the Second World War. The route to the Cascatelle di Valcimarra leads through the forest along the Fosso Cimarra and includes small wooden huts and gnome figures.
Archaeology, Everyday Life and Regional Cuisine
The Antiquarium ed Area Archeologica di Pievefavera includes excavated rooms, some of which have a well-preserved spicatum floor. The structural remains apparently belonged to the agricultural section of a large villa; their earliest phase may date back to the Republican period. The Museo di Arte Povera Contadina “Luigi Fagianella” displays around 1,500 objects relating to everyday life and agricultural work in the Marche region during the 20th century. The Museo Civico della Resistenza includes the Pinacoteca della Resistenza, an area dedicated to the Caldarola Sistina and rooms for temporary exhibitions.
Borgo di Bistocco lies on the Chienti River. In its surroundings, it preserves the ruins of two medieval watchtowers connected with the da Varano defense system. Il Picciolo di Rame represents the regional cuisine: traditional dishes from the cuisine of Macerata are served there, based on peasant recipes and, in some cases, medieval and Renaissance recipes.
Pilgrimage Sites and Practical Information
The Abbatia Sancti Benedicti De crypta Saxi Latronis lies along the Cammino Francescano della Marca. Above the Santuario Madonna del Sasso, an uphill turn leads to the fortified Benedictine complex dating from the 10th to the 11th century. The partially ruined remains today include a tower, church walls, a round-arched portal and a single-nave window opening. Madonna del Monte has Franciscan origins; the image was painted by Lorenzo d’Alessandro in 1491.
The Santuario Madonna del Sasso – Valcimarra is temporarily closed due to earthquake damage. For the Antiquarium ed Area Archeologica di Pievefavera, guided tours are scheduled in autumn and winter by reservation, and in spring and summer on Tuesdays and Fridays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. These differing opening and usage details are just as important for planning your day as the combination of culture, landscape, history and regional cuisine.
Further destinations for planning your trip include Potenza Picena, Petriolo, Treia, Ripe San Ginesio, Montefano, Santo Stefano, Gualdo and Pollenza.
