Porto Recanati combines a coastline with local cuisine, cycling routes and traces of different eras. Its equipped beaches are close to the old town; at the same time, cycling routes run from the Potenza towards Monte Conero. Beach areas and coastal activities
A long stretch of equipped beaches lies close to the old town. Breakwaters protect the beaches and form calm natural bathing pools, including for children. The three main beach areas are the central coast, the beaches of Scossicci and Pineta Volpini. Activities such as windsurfing, kitesurfing and sailing are available at the freely accessible beaches. The coastline therefore offers both sheltered bathing areas and opportunities for water sports.
Cycling routes along the river and coast
At the Potenza, a three-kilometre cycling path begins at the river mouth. It follows the south bank, passes through the Santa Maria in Potenza area and connects to the cycling path on the north bank. Another route is about four kilometres long and starts on Via 29 Marzo. It initially follows the Banderuola cycling path; from the campervan parking area, it runs north along the coast, past the Scossicci neighbourhood, to the end of Via Amundsen. There it rejoins the Banderuola cycling path.
Other cycling routes lead to the Chapel of the Banderuola and the Potenza, as well as along the coast towards Monte Conero, with views of the sea. Beyond Porto Recanati, cycling paths connect the town with Loreto and Recanati and pass through towns and the hills of the Marche. These routes range from a riverside path to coastal routes and connections to the wider region.
Townscape, Potentia and local tradition
The walls of the Castello Svevo enclose the Arena Gigli. The Church of San Giovanni Battista stands on the central Corso Matteotti and is Porto Recanati’s most important religious building. The archaeological site of Potentia offers a different perspective: the foundations of public buildings that are still visible reveal the layout of the ancient city and offer insight into its social and administrative organisation.
Nearby is the former Abbazia di Santa Maria in Potenza, now a private residence. The Romanesque complex retains its apse with a small colonnaded loggia and its crypt; the crypt contains a triptych and a painting by Cesare Peruzzi. The mouth of the Potenza is also connected to the town: there, as part of a local seafaring tradition, fishermen cast a large, round net by hand. The river mouth is not far from the centre.
Brodetto from Porto Recanati
Brodetto from Porto Recanati is prepared without tomatoes and flavoured with Zafferanella or Zafferanone, the wild saffron of Monte Conero. The annual Settimana del Brodetto takes place in the first week of June. Residents and travellers can sample the local speciality at a discounted price during the event.
