Pioraco Between Rivers, Rock and Papermaking Tradition

Near Pioraco, the Potenza River joins the Scarzito. Here, the Potenza and Scarzito rivers have carved gorges, rapids and waterfalls. This combination of water and rock defines the character of the town and provides a clear setting for nature experiences, walks and historical discoveries.

River Landscapes and Special Trails

Along the banks of the Potenza River runs the approximately 500-metre-long Sentiero de Li Vurgacci. The footpath follows waterfalls, whirlpools, water-carved gorges and lush vegetation. One striking section is the Fossa dei Mostri: here, the rock contains grotesque faces carved into the stone by the local artist Antonio Ciccarelli. La Croce viewpoint offers a different perspective on Pioraco, with its 360-degree view of the town and the surrounding valley.

Hiking, Cycling and Finding Your Way Around

For cycling, Pioraco has an 8 km-long cycle path along the Potenza River. The Sentiero Francescano runs mostly along an unpaved path and allows visitors to discover the geological features of the Piani di Montelago, which are part of the Natura 2000 network. As a hiking trail, the Sentiero Francescano connects Pioraco with Sefro and follows in the footsteps of Saint Francis of Assisi. The Grotte San Vittorino lies behind the Carabinieri barracks and can be reached via a steep concrete staircase. In Piè di Gualdo, a facility with amenities offers picnic areas, an avenue for long, peaceful walks and a playground for small children. This allows nature and exercise breaks to be combined with different daily rhythms, without requiring any other particular characteristics of the destination.

Churches, Bridges and Medieval Traces

The Church of Madonna della Grotta is partly set into the rock and was formerly known as Madonna delle Carceri. Inside is a wooden statue of the Madonna and Child. The Feast of Madonna della Grotta is celebrated every three years. The Church of San Vittorino is documented in a record dating from 1119. Ponte Marmone also brings historical routes to life: it probably dates from the 1st century AD and was part of a branch of the ancient Via Flaminia connecting Nocera, Osimo and Ancona.

The historic centre of Pioraco preserves its medieval layout with narrow alleyways, stone houses, arches and bridges. The Franciscan cloister was built in 1327 next to the Church of San Francesco and is now the seat of the municipal administration. The wooden Passerella del Bacio footbridge crosses the Potenza River and is considered a symbolic place for lovers. Outside the town of Pioraco stands the Church of Santissimo Crocifisso, built in the 14th century. In the centre of Seppio, the Church of Madonna delle Lacrime preserves the panel that gave the place its name and is associated with the miracle of the tears in 1521.

Papermaking Tradition and Collections

The Museo della Carta e della Filigrana is dedicated to Pioraco’s papermaking tradition, which dates back to the 13th century. At “La magia di un foglio”, you can make a sheet of paper yourself, as in the 13th century. The museum also offers a live demonstration of the traditional handmade production of paper; for this purpose, an ancient Gualchiera, or 14th-century paper mill, was reconstructed. The Museo dei Fossili e dei Funghi preserves rare palaeontological finds from around the world.
