Recanati: Discover Museums, Music and Leopardi

Recanati brings together art, literature, theatre and regional history in an unusually diverse cultural landscape. Those interested in the development of a city from prehistoric times to the present day, in music or in the work of Giacomo Leopardi will find several distinct points of interest here.

Museums covering urban history, music and emigration

A central point of interest is the Villa Colloredo Mels. The museum comprises five departments dedicated to the history and art of Recanati, from prehistoric times to the present day. This gives it a chronological scope that extends far beyond a single chapter of the city’s history and provides a broad introduction to its cultural development.

The Museo della Musica adds another area of focus. There, you can see numerous instruments made in the area’s music industry district. The Museo Beniamino Gigli is located in the Sala dei Trenta of the Teatro Persiani, at the level of the third tier of boxes, and displays stage costumes, personal belongings, memorabilia, photographs, letters and documents from the tenor’s estate.

The Museo dell’Emigrazione Marchigiana is dedicated to various stages in the history of emigration from the Marche region.

Teatro Persiani and Leopardi’s literary sites

The Teatro Persiani was inaugurated in 1840. Its auditorium has 400 seats and features a horseshoe-shaped design with three tiers of boxes and a gallery. The Museo Beniamino Gigli is located in the same theatre, directly linking the building’s architecture with the memory of the tenor.

Casa Leopardi includes the library where Giacomo Leopardi completed his studies, as well as a permanent museum. The Centro Nazionale di Studi Leopardiani is also based in Recanati. It is housed in a monumental building adjoining the Palazzo Leopardi and provides access to the summit of the Colle dell’Infinito.

The Orto sul Colle dell’Infinito forms the high point of a tour through poetry. Immersive projections and striking experiences come together there with an exploration of the history, significance and universal value of a few verses. This place therefore focuses not only on literature as text, but also on its impact and intellectual context.

Panoramic views and distinctive urban architecture

The Torre Civica is crowned by a panoramic terrace. It is enclosed by Ghibelline merlons on projecting corbels.

Travelling by train

Ancona railway station is recommended for travelling by train. From there, bus route R runs to Recanati. Travellers should treat the change from train to bus as a separate part of the journey and factor it into planning their stay in Recanati at an early stage.
