Serravalle Di Chienti lies at the entrance to the valley of the Chienti River. Visitors can explore the area from several perspectives: the Museo Paleontologico Archeologico offers insights into the history of the Earth, the Chiesa di Santa Lucia into sacred art, while the Fortezza dei Da Varano, the Botte dei da Varano and the Condotto Romano showcase historic engineering works. The Parco Fluviale complements these themes with walking trails.

The History of the Earth at the Museo Paleontologico Archeologico

The Museo Paleontologico Archeologico offers workshops, guided tours and educational areas. It preserves fossils dating from 700,000 to 900,000 years ago and is divided into two sections. The first is dedicated to fossil malacofauna and documents its development from the Jurassic to the Holocene. The second covers fossil mammals from the Pleistocene sites of Collecurti and Cesi. The museum's chronological range thus extends from very early traces of life to the mammals of the Pleistocene.

Historic Waterworks and Precise Construction

The Botte dei da Varano is a hydraulic structure approximately 200 metres long. It was built in the 15th century by Giulio Cesare Varano to drain the plain. The water channel known as the Condotto Romano is approximately one kilometre long, mostly underground and built from carefully cut travertine blocks. The origin of these blocks is not local in the strict sense. Along its entire length, the channel has a uniform gradient of 0.2%.

Church and Fortress in the Cultural Landscape

The Chiesa di Santa Lucia was built in the 12th century and preserves frescoes by Giovanni Angelo D’Antonio. Significant sections of the walls and one of its five towers remain from the Fortezza dei Da Varano. The Fortezza dei Da Varano in the village of Castello di Serrapetrona was a military outpost for controlling the mandatory passage between Colfiorito, the Chienti Valley and the town. The history of the area can therefore also be explored through sacred art and military architecture.

The Botte dei da Varano can be reached from Foligno and Civitanova via the SS 77 della Val di Chienti to the Serravalle di Chienti or Colfiorito exits, followed by the signs to Fonte delle Mattinate. The Fortezza dei Da Varano can be reached from Foligno and Civitanova via the SS 77 della Val di Chienti to the Serravalle di Chienti exit. The two destinations therefore each have their own clearly described access route for your planning.
