Alfi between San Marco and the Fiordimonte Valley

Alfi is part of the sequence of villages in the Fiordimonte Valley, which leads past churches and chapels to the Madonna del Monte Aguzzo Pass. In the wider regional surroundings of Alfi lies the Valle di Fiordimonte wildlife and hunting reserve, covering more than 4,000 hectares at elevations between 600 and 1,400 metres above sea level.

Culture in San Marco Church

San Marco Church is of medieval origin and stands on Alfi’s village square. The Brotherhood of the Rosary was founded in 1581 and is based at San Marco. The Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament is also based there.

The triptych in San Marco depicts the Madonna and Child as well as Saints Mark, Matthias, Sebastian and Stephen. The work is attributed to Nobile di Francesco da Lucca. The Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament also commissioned Nicola Amatore or Amatori, who came from Belvedere Ostrense, to create a painting depicting the Triumph of the Eucharist and Saints Matthias and Mark.

The church’s furnishings also span several historical periods. The wooden furnishings of the side altars, with their twisted columns and floral ornamentation, were made around the middle of the 18th century. San Marco formerly housed a large processional cross from the 15th century; today, it is kept at the archiepiscopal curia in Camerino. The church was temporarily closed because of damage caused by the earthquake.

With the Palazzo Galassi, which dates from the 19th century, Alfi has another historic architectural monument alongside its medieval religious building. Together with the works of art in San Marco, it creates a chronological arc from the 15th to the 19th century, without the character of the village being limited to a single period.

Routes for Cycling and E-Bikes

The municipality of Valfornace has eight MTB and e-bike routes of varying lengths and difficulty levels. One of these routes is called Alfi Visso Macereto Cupi Alfi. It starts in Alfi, leads via Visso to the Sanctuary of Macereto and on to Cupi, then returns to Alfi. For personal travel planning, the route therefore offers a clear itinerary between its starting point and return destination.

In the area of the Fiordimonte sports facilities, there is an e-bike charging station with a tyre-inflation device and facilities for minor repairs. The combination of San Marco, Palazzo Galassi and the cycling routes may play a role when choosing accommodation in Alfi: it allows the stay to focus more strongly either on culture or on a combination of visiting the village and actively exploring the surrounding region.
