Colbordolo: Discover the Castle, Art and Landscape

Colbordolo combines medieval traces, sacred art and a landscape that can be explored along paths, viewpoints and cultural sites. Colbordolo Castle has been documented since 1213. A bull issued by Pope Innocent III mentions it in connection with the possessions of the Abbey of San Tommaso in Foglia. The documented history of the village thus reaches far back into the Middle Ages.

On the road from Colbordolo to Montefabbri stands the 19th-century Oratory of Madonna del Monte. Monte di Colbordolo is considered a traditional destination for picnics and excursions. At the foot of Monte di Colbordolo, the remains of an ancient aqueduct are also still visible. It once supplied the village fountain and washhouse, thus pointing to the area's former water supply and communal life.

The steep ascent to Monte di Colbordolo opens up views across the valleys of the Apsa and Foglia rivers. In the old town centre, a stone-paved ramp leads to the gate tower, the landmark of Colbordolo. Here, the history of the village and the landscape are not merely closely connected thematically; they can also be experienced through the area's actual paths and lines of sight.

Church and Art in Colbordolo

The Church of San Giovanni Battista in Colbordolo is a parish church and an architectural heritage site. It retains its original single-nave structure in the Romanesque Revival style. As a result, the clear spatial layout of the sacred building stands out directly alongside its artistic furnishings.

The church houses a painting by Claudio Ridolfi from 1605. It depicts the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child, as well as Saints Joseph, Mary Magdalene, Dominic and Roch. The painting is set into a gilded wooden altar with 15 panels depicting the Mysteries of the Rosary. This gives you a direct opportunity to engage with painting, religious imagery and craftsmanship within a single church interior.

El Paternal Mio Nido – Centro di documentazione Giovanni Santi, located at Via Roma in 61022 Colbordolo (PU), is a museum, gallery or collection. The documentation centre is dedicated to the artistic and literary work of Giovanni Santi, Raphael Sanzio's father, who was born in Colbordolo. Its focus therefore connects the village with a figure from the history of Italian art and literature.

The exhibition rooms of the Giovanni Santi Documentation Centre contain photographic reproductions and enlargements of details from the artist's paintings. These are intended to convey a faithful picture of 15th-century court culture. The presentation therefore directs attention not only to individual works, but also to the cultural environment in which Giovanni Santi worked.

Paths Through Landscape and Culture

Since 2019, the Giovanni Santi Documentation Centre has been the starting point of the Parco delle Muse e delle Ninfe. The Parco delle Muse e delle Ninfe consists of 28 stations connected with Santi and the themes of nymphs, water and landscape. The stations extend across the entire area as far as Urbino. Culture and landscape are thus brought together in a broad thematic context.

The communal oven of Colbordolo is also one of the area's tangible features. It is still fully functional and bears witness to the social life of the rural community. Alongside its castle, church and art, Colbordolo thus preserves an element of everyday communal life whose significance derives from the connection between function and social history.

For sports-oriented travel plans, there is the “Colbordolo” cycling route. It is classified as an expert route and is considered panoramic, but also features steeper climbs and descents. The route runs from Vallefoglia via Colbordolo to Montefabbri. Those who place a cycling tour at the centre of their trip will therefore find a clearly defined route with a focus on scenery and a more demanding elevation profile.
