Ginestreto combines a medieval character with a remarkable concentration of ecclesiastical and art-historical features. At its heart is the Castello di Ginestreto: a Malatesta emblem above the large arch opposite the parish church attests to its medieval character. This makes it a destination whose history can be experienced not only through dates, but also through distinctive architectural and artistic works.

Castello and ecclesiastical history

The Castello di Ginestreto is already mentioned in a document from the Vatican Archives dating from 1283. This early written reference complements the visible connection with the Malatesta period and makes the Castello an important historical subject for exploring Ginestreto.

An even earlier historical layer is associated with the Pieve Vecchia di Ginestreto. It was Ginestreto’s first parish seat; local historians date it to the 7th or 8th century. The frescoes inside are dated to the period between the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The largest and most artistically valuable fresco in the Pieve Vecchia is the Madonna della Misericordia; it is attributed to Giovanni Antonio da Pesaro.

The later religious history is also part of the local character. In 1595, a church named Santa Maria Nuova e San Pietro Apostolo was built within the Castello di Ginestreto. The Church of San Pietro in Rosis also preserves three wooden altars that adorned the Church of San Rocco in Pesaro until the Second World War.

Museums and historical destinations
