Sant'Ippolito: Stonework and Hilly Landscape

Sant'Ippolito combines the hilly landscape on the edge of the Metauro Valley with a tradition of stoneworking that is still visible today. Landscape and Character of the Town

The municipal area lies on the edge of the broad and fertile Metauro Valley and is crossed by numerous waterways. Green fields, rows of vines and scattered trees shape the scenery typical of low-lying hills. As a result, two aspects stand closely side by side in Sant'Ippolito: the open landscape of the valley and the stone evidence of a long-standing local craft tradition.

Stonework as a Common Thread

Sant'Ippolito has been known since the 14th century for the work of its local stonemasons and marble workers. The Museo del Territorio - Arte degli Scalpellini is a museum spread throughout the area, dedicated to promoting the old stoneworking tradition. Information panels explain the work in the quarries, reconstructions show workshops, and a collection of tools and equipment illustrates stone processing. The museum's documentation centre is located in the Palazzo Bracci, built in the 19th century by one of the town's most important craftsmen.

From the Museo del Territorio - Arte degli Scalpellini, a historical and artistic tour leads through the entire municipal area of Sant'Ippolito. Along the route, you can see sandstone work from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries on the exterior walls of buildings. Today, Sant'Ippolito forms a small open-air museum in which almost every house stands out with niches containing figurative artworks, portals, corbels, window frames and other decorations.

Historical Traces in the Town

The fortification wall of the Castello di Sant'Ippolito, built entirely from sandstone, is still intact. Beneath a vault in the Castello there is also an inscription in Gothic script dating from the 12th century. The Chiesa di S. Ippolito is a parish church dating from approximately the 17th century. In the Pian di Rose area, the remains of a large Roman villa rustica from the 2nd century AD were discovered.

The Palazzina Sabatelli also adds to the historic character. It has richly decorated interiors and developed around a tower with a dovecote. In the 17th century, several rooms were added, followed later by an elegant loggia, a portico and side stairways. Sant'Ippolito was founded between the 6th and 7th centuries by people from Fossombrone; the local history therefore extends far beyond individual buildings.

Events and Cycling Tour

Scolpire in Piazza is an international art event dedicated to sandstone sculpture, held every year in July in Sant'Ippolito. For cycle tourists, the 138 km road-cycling loop Saltara – Sant'Ippolito – Fossombrone – Acqualagna – Fermignano – Urbino – Saltara passes through the town.
