Marotta by the Sea: Coastline, Mosaics and History

Marotta reveals its character right along the shoreline. Sandy and rocky stretches of beach alternate along the coast, while the seabed off Marotta is consistently sandy. Marotta Beach has received the Blue Flag award every year since 2009.

Waterfront Promenade with Cycle Path and Mosaics

As part of the broader “Ciclovia Adriatica” project, Marotta’s waterfront promenade features a wide cycle path. This makes the promenade one of the defining settings for anyone who wants to explore the coastal area by bicycle. The “Mosaichiamo la città” initiative adds a distinctive visual touch: large sections of Marotta’s shoreline have been decorated with colorful mosaics.

Mosaic art also continues at individual locations throughout the town. Outside the Church of San Giovanni on Via Martini is one of the town’s largest and most elaborately designed mosaics. Those exploring Marotta on foot will therefore encounter not only the beach and promenade, but also artistically designed sections along the shoreline and at specific sites in the town.

Memorial Sites and Historical Traces

On Piazza Roma, the Monumento ai Caduti del Mare commemorates all those who lost their lives at sea or went missing at sea in times of war and peace. Another memorial site is located in the Giardini Le 11 Eroine. The monument there commemorates eleven girls from Marotta who came to the aid of the crew of the armed naval pontoon Faà di Bruno on November 18, 1917, during the First World War, after it had run aground off Marotta.

Older eras are also present in the townscape. A Roman-era cistern shows that Marotta was used or visited during the Roman period. The Cippo Confinario bears a long Latin inscription and marked a kind of state border for centuries. These two remnants offer different perspectives on the past: the cistern points to the Roman period, while the boundary marker illustrates the historical importance of borders.

Other specific traces of the town’s history include the Antico Pozzo in Marotta. It was built by the municipality in 1927 for the local community. Marotta-Mondolfo railway station is also one of the region’s industrial archaeology monuments.

Festa della Tratta and Local Cuisine

The Festa della Tratta is a seasonal highlight. It generally takes place during the last week of July on Marotta’s waterfront promenade, on the free beach next to the pier. The Festa della Tratta features food stalls serving typical dishes from Marotta’s cuisine. Today, the experiences associated with the event can once again be enjoyed thanks to special permits issued by the Capitaneria di Porto.
