Montegrimano between Castle History and Hilly Landscapes
Montegrimano is a destination for travelers who want to discover Italian history not only in individual buildings, but also in the townscape, landscape and regional trails. Monte Grimano Terme is located on a spur above the Conca Valley at an altitude of around 600 meters. The historic center, places of remembrance, hilly landscape and excursions offer different perspectives on your stay.
Historic center with medieval traces
The historic center of Monte Grimano Terme has a spiral-shaped town layout of medieval origin. The Torre Civica was built in the 14th century as part of a castle fortified by the Montefeltro family. The Chiesa di San Silvestro was built at the end of the 18th century based on a design by Cosimo Morelli. At the entrance to the town stands the residence of the Massaioli family, built in the 17th century and now used as the town hall. The entrance staircase, a fireplace, vaulted cellar structures and an icehouse have been preserved there.
Churches, places of remembrance and a panoramic walkway
The parish church of Chiesa di San Silvestro contains eight large-format paintings from the 17th to the 19th century. The church also has an organ with just under 500 pipes, listed as cultural heritage of the Marche region. The Church of San Giovanni Battista in Montetassi originally belonged to the Romanesque country churches of the Conca Valley and can probably be dated to the 12th century. The Cippo di Garibaldi commemorates the military leader’s passage through the area in 1849. A panoramic walkway was opened along the walls of the Borgo in June 2014.
Trails on Monte San Lorenzo
The Cippo di Garibaldi lies between forests and hills and is a destination for walks and trekking. The Giro del Monte San Lorenzo starts in Monte Grimano Terme and passes through Ca’ Secco. The circular trail is 15.7 kilometers long and designed for mountain biking and trekking. Good fitness is required for the mountain-bike tour; at the same time, the route is considered suitable for all levels. The Osservatorio Astronomico Monte San Lorenzo is located on the southern slope of Monte San Lorenzo at 536 meters above sea level. It can be reached via provincial road SP130, which connects the valley of the Conca River with the valley of the Foglia River.
Thermal tradition with a current note
The thermal park of Monte Grimano Terme is currently closed. The hydrotherapy center uses alkaline, salt-bromide-iodine and sulfurous healing waters that rise on the slopes of nearby Monte S. Paolo; the center is currently temporarily closed. If you choose the town as your accommodation base, these different focal points should be incorporated into your personal planning: historic townscape, walking trails, trekking and regional events.
Local festivals throughout the year
Events in Monte Grimano Terme include the Sagra del tartufo nero in July. In August, Il Borgo in festa – La buona carne del Montefeltro is one of them. These dates connect the town with culinary themes and regional traditions and may provide an additional reason for you to align your travel period with your interests.
