San Lorenzo in Campo: Culture in the Cesano Valley
Historic centre and landscape
San Lorenzo in Campo is located in the rural landscape of the hills of the Marche region in the Cesano Valley. In the historic centre, the town preserves its original layout with narrow lanes and entrance arches. A medieval fortification wall with towers is also part of the townscape; at present, the only missing feature on the towers is the battlement. The combination of rural surroundings, a compact town centre and medieval fortifications gives San Lorenzo in Campo a distinctive profile for travellers who want to experience history not only in individual buildings, but also in its spatial context.
Museums in the Palazzo della Rovere and throughout the town
The Museo Archeologico del Territorio di Suasa is housed in the Palazzo della Rovere. It presents the development of the environment and human settlement in the Cesano Valley. In the second room, you can see lithic artefacts found in the area of San Lorenzo in Campo. Six rooms also trace the geological development of the Cesano Valley through fossils of its Pleistocene animal and plant life. The thematic scope thus extends from early traces of human presence to the history of the valley's landscape.
The Museo delle Terre Marchigiane comprises more than 3,000 objects and is divided into four tours. Places of life display reconstructed areas of a rural sharecropping household, while places of encounter lead into rooms dedicated to leisure and social interaction. Ancient crafts focus on workshops and workplaces of artisans, while the collections tour comprises various sections on ceramics and objects made of copper and iron. Reconstructed interiors are brought to life by images and sounds, providing visitors with a comprehensive sensory experience.
Theatre and local tradition
The Teatro Comunale „Mario Tiberini“ is a 19th-century theatre. It is dedicated to the local tenor Mario Tiberini and is located on the piano nobile of the Palazzo della Rovere. Two tiers with boxes, topped by a gallery box, as well as Art Nouveau fresco decorations define the interior. Throughout the year, it hosts a theatre season featuring drama and children's theatre. In this way, the building combines its architectural features with a cultural programme for different age groups.
A distinctive combination of town life and regional tradition is offered by the Sagra del Castagnolo. It has been held in San Lorenzo in Campo on Easter Monday for more than 50 years. This date, firmly established in the annual calendar, complements the museums and theatre with an occasion centred on local festival culture.
Routes along the river and through the surrounding area
Several differently designed routes are available for walks and hikes. The first municipal trekking route runs for 7 km from San Lorenzo in Campo to Montalfoglio and has an elevation gain of 200 m. The 4-km Sentiero di Bagnara circular route follows the Cesano River from Mulino Gazzetti via the Ponte dell’acqua purgativa to the „laghetto“ rest area and back. The Cammino dei Lavatoi is designed as a cultural, natural-history and landscape route and includes the municipal centre of San Lorenzo in Campo as well as the hamlet of Montalfoglio. The two designated route lengths of 7 and 4 km help you adapt your choice of route to your preferred daily itinerary.
The Punto I.A.T. in San Lorenzo in Campo provides tourists with information about the entire municipal area. This is particularly useful if, in addition to the historic centre, you would like to include the museums, the routes along the Cesano and Montalfoglio in your plans.
