Massa on the southwestern slope of Monte Nerone: History and Nature

Massa is a small hamlet of Cagli on the southwestern slope of Monte Nerone, at an elevation of 510 m. The hamlet combines a clearly identifiable historic center with paths and landscapes along the Fiumicello. Historical traces in the town center

In Massa’s town center, history is evident not only in individual buildings but also in the material used for the houses and streets. Of the former Abbey of San Pietro di Massa, only the church remains today. In Massa’s parish church, remnants of the old abbey have been incorporated into the masonry. The furnishings also include a 17th-century altarpiece depicting “Madonna del Rosario e i Santi”.

Several restored sandstone houses characterize the town center. One of them is a house of the tower dovecote type. The streets are also paved with sandstone. As a result, a compact townscape unfolds on a walk through Massa, where the history of religious buildings, traditional architectural forms and local stone can be seen side by side.

The Fiumicello and surrounding paths

From Massa, you can reach the ruins of the Mulino Bordone mill via a downhill path. The path therefore leads to a tangible example of former use in the area surrounding the hamlet. Along the Fiumicello, by contrast, the natural side of the landscape is particularly evident: the water is shaded by black poplars, black alders, shrub willows, downy oaks and European hop-hornbeams.

The Fiumicello’s streambed consists of large gravel stones and can be walked along as long as the dense vegetation allows. This limitation is important for your planning, because the streambed should not be considered independently of the local vegetation conditions. The Fiumicello Valley can also be accessed via the road from Pianello di Cagli to Serravalle di Carda; the road runs along the slope above the stream.

About 1.5 km before Massa, a turnoff from the road to the local cemetery leads to the Abbadia. This is the church of the former Benedictine monastery of San Pietro di Massa, founded between the 9th and 10th centuries. This site adds another historical point of reference to the town center and can be taken into account when finding your way around the area.
