Campodipietra Between Village History and Sacred Art
Campodipietra largely preserves the characteristics of a medieval village that developed around the parish church of San Martino. The municipal area is home to buildings from different periods alongside rural religious sites. In this way, the history of the village is linked with Baroque, Romanesque and ecclesiastical architecture.
San Martino and the Paintings by Paolo Gamba
The Parrocchia San Martino Vescovo is a Baroque church built in 1770 near one of the three gates in Campodipietra’s medieval town walls. Its location links the church to the village’s older fortification structure.
Its apse contains five paintings from 1774 by the Molisan painter Paolo Gamba. The paintings depict the Immaculate Conception and the four Evangelists. Thus, the apse brings together a Marian subject and depictions of the Evangelists in a group of five works.
The cylindrical bell tower of the Parrocchia San Martino Vescovo was built on the tower of an old baronial palace, which formerly had an elaborately decorated onion dome. The former palace tower and the once richly decorated dome are therefore part of the architectural history of the bell tower.
San Bonaventura on Piazza Rimembranza
The Chiesa San Bonaventura on Piazza Rimembranza is a Romanesque church. After suffering severe damage in the 1688 earthquake, it was rebuilt in 1700; in 1705, it was reconsecrated by Cardinal Vincenzo Orsini.
Santa Maria in Valle and the September Events
The rural Chiesa di Santa Maria in Valle is located in the hamlet of Civitella in the area of Campodipietra. It was probably originally a burial chapel.
Every September, a procession takes place along the road leading to the Chiesa di Santa Maria in Valle. In the same month, evenings of music and entertainment are held at the Chiesa di Santa Maria in Valle.
Cappella di Sant’Antonio in Contrada San Pietro
The Cappella di Sant’Antonio is located in the area of Campodipietra, in Contrada San Pietro. Every year on June 13, the feast of Saint Anthony is celebrated there. For annual planning purposes, a visit to Campodipietra can be arranged around the feast at the Cappella di Sant’Antonio on June 13.
Ex Palazzo Ducale
Access to the Ex Palazzo Ducale is through the main entrance at Piazza San Martino Vescovo 8. The information specifies both the piazza and house number 8.
