Guardiaregia: Nature between Gorge and Local Tradition

Gorge, waterfall and protected landscape

Guardiaregia combines natural attractions with local culture. The Gole del Torrente Quirino form a narrow, deep gorge approximately 4 km long between the settlement of Guardiaregia and the surrounding heights. In addition, the Oasi WWF Guardiaregia-Campochiaro stands for the protection of special landscapes: it is recognized as a regional reserve, preserves impressive karst landscapes and is located in the Special Area of Conservation IT222287 in the municipalities of Guardiaregia and Campochiaro (CB). It is also a Special Protection Area, ZPS IT222296.

Waterfall, mountain forest and rare wildlife

The Cascata di San Nicola reaches a total height of approximately 100 metres. It carries water seasonally and remains dry only in July and August. At 1,823 metres, Monte Mutria is the highest peak in the reserve and is covered by dense beech forest. The spectacled salamander species Salamandrina dagli Occhiali plays a special role: it is a rare Italian endemic and the symbol of the reserve.

Observations along the “San Nicola” Nature Trail

Along the “San Nicola” Nature Trail, you can observe orchids, the Salamandrina dagli Occhiali, diurnal birds of prey, numerous butterflies, colourful caterpillars and songbirds. The trail also offers viewpoints over the gorge of the Torrente Quirino and the Cascata di San Nicola. As a circular trail approximately 1.5 km long, it adds a clearly defined route to the nature observations.

Church and festivals in Guardiaregia

The Chiesa San Nicola di Bari is open during the day, and admission is free. During the Festa di San Nicola, a traditional procession accompanies the statue of San Nicola to its chapel. On 5 and 6 December, the Sagra dei Fagioli is celebrated in Guardiaregia in honour of the patron saint San Nicola; bean soup is offered to those present for dinner. At the Sagra dei Fagioli, the Panelle, small loaves of bread, are also blessed by the parish priest and distributed to the population during the festival on the day after 6 December.

Tre Frati and clay processing

A visit to the “Tre Frati” explores 500-year-old beech trees as well as an intact ecosystem with small streams. Traditional clay processing offers another way to engage with the town’s history. It is part of Guardiaregia’s local history and culture; the Pignattari are known for producing tegami and ciotole.

The Oasi WWF Guardiaregia-Campochiaro can be reached by car via the S.S. 17 between Isernia and Campobasso. You can take the Guardiaregia or Campochiaro exit and then follow the signs to the Oasi WWF.
