Castropignano between the Castle, Tratturo and Historic Centre
Castropignano combines a historic centre on a steep slope with castle history, churches and traces of the Tratturo Lucera-Castel di Sangro. The houses of Castropignano’s historic centre overlook the valley from a steep slope; at the same time, paths, a museum and individual buildings offer different ways to explore Castropignano’s history.
Castello d’Evoli and Early History
Castello d’Evoli was an important military base for controlling the Tratturo Lucera-Castel di Sangro, along which herds of livestock were driven towards Apulia. You reach the castle via Via Salita San Marco, then Via Marconi and Via Castello. At the summit, megalithic walls dating from the 5th to 4th century BC can be seen; they were built by Samnite populations.
The clock tower is also part of the townscape. It is the only surviving monument in the town and a heavily remodelled remnant of the first castle.
Churches and Historic Town Centre
Santa Maria delle Grazie is a 16th-century church and a rare example of Renaissance architecture in Molise. The Church of San Salvatore dates from 1200, while San Nicola dates from 1323; San Nicola has since been deconsecrated. In an alley near San Salvatore, the historic centre is home to the house of the poet Eugenio Cirese, who lived from 1885 to 1955 and resided in Castropignano.
In nearby Roccaspromonte stands Santa Maria della Pietà, dating from the 14th century. The two-aisled church features recently restored depictions of angels and adds another perspective on the religious architecture of the surrounding area.
Tratturo, Paths and Rural Life
The Tratturo Lucera-Castel di Sangro crosses the territory of Castropignano. It is 127 kilometres long and 50 Neapolitan paces, equivalent to 116 metres, wide. The section of La Via del Tratturo near Castropignano is marked by the tratturo chapel of Santa Lucia. The well-preserved historic centre and Castello d’Evoli are noteworthy destinations there.
Shortly before reaching the town, a reactivated path leads to the Grotta di San Michele. The Museo della Civiltà Contadina displays numerous objects and tools used in traditional work activities.
Practical Orientation for Your Stay
In front of the entrance stands the stone cross from 1636, known as “u prtone la croce”. When planning accommodation in Castropignano, you can combine these highlights: the castle and churches for cultural interests, the Tratturo and the path to the Grotta di San Michele for walking and landscape experiences, and the museum for insights into traditional work.
At the Centro Tartufi Molise location in Contrada Vicenne in Castropignano, Casa Molisana includes a restaurant, a bar and a sales area. Alongside the historic destinations, this provides a specific place within the municipality for food, a stay and regional products.
