Montorio nei Frentani lies in lower Molise between the Fortore and Biferno rivers. At the same time, the town is situated on the watershed ridge of the Biferno Valley. The approach road already reveals the character of its location: it winds up a hill lying between Cigno and Tona. From there, views extend to the Maiella, the Gargano and the Adriatic. This creates a destination where landscape, local history and art come together for visitors with a range of sightseeing interests.

Medieval Traces and Historic Buildings

Terra Vecchia preserves a medieval village with towers, ring walls and old entrance gates. The gates still retain loopholes and remains of gun emplacements. The remains of the fortified medieval village of Gerione are also located within the territory of Montorio nei Frentani; excavations were recently carried out there. Palazzo Magliano provides a different historical highlight. The building was constructed in 1736 as a typical manor house of its time and is now a private residence.

Santa Maria Assunta and Sacred Art

The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta has three naves and is 28 metres long, 17 metres wide and 11 metres high. Its floor area is 480 m². Its furnishings include an altarpiece by Teodoro d'Errico depicting the Annunciation. The church also has a three-section organ dating from 1779. Visitors interested in architecture, painting and historic instruments will find several clearly distinct points of interest within a single sacred building.

An Ornithological Collection with a Unique History

The “Carfagnini” ornithological collection comprises around 600 specimens from a single habitat. It was begun in 1896 by the natural sciences professor Edoardo Carfagnini; his brother Leonardo completed the collection. It is kept in the home of Teodorico Carfagnini.

Cultural Events in August and Ancient Paths

Every August, Montorio nei Frentani hosts the art and cultural event series “Noi... Artisti di questa terra”. It honours artists and prominent figures from Molise and throughout Italy who have brought recognition to the region through art and culture. The series began in 1997. For travel planning, this recurring annual August date can serve as a distinct cultural focus, while the historic sites and sacred buildings complement the visit with themes preserved through the ages.

Springs, Benedictine Presence and Ancient Paths in the Town

Montorio nei Frentani also has water-related sacred sites with the remains of springs. These are connected with the former Benedictine presence in San Mauro and San Michele.
