Pietracatella: Church Art and Trails through the Tappino Valley

Pietracatella brings together sacred art, rural trails and distinctive festivals. A striking introduction is the Living Nativity, staged every year in the historic town center: alleyways, tuff-stone caves, cellars and old craft shops become part of the setting. This creates a townscape in which historic structures and traditional customs are directly connected.

The Church of San Giacomo was built in the 13th century over the Chapel of Santa Margherita. Its single-nave structure has four bays covered by cross vaults and separated by pointed arches; the building dates from the 13th to the 14th century. The church also houses a wooden crucifix considered one of the oldest crucifixes in the Molise region. Visitors are asked to make an advance request to the municipality or the parish of San Giovanni Battista.

In the Church of San Giovanni Battista, six side altars draw attention to different saints and religious themes. They are dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo, San Donato, Sant’Antonio da Padova, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, San Giuseppe and San Gerardo Maiella. In the apse stands a statue of the church’s patron saint, San Giovanni Battista, completed in 1871 by the papier-mâché artists Michele and Gabriele Falcucci, who came from Atessa. The older high altar is a precious work in polychrome marble; its antependium bears a medallion depicting the Forerunner. It was erected in 1793 by the parish priest Giuseppe Ialenti.

Santa Maria di Costantinopoli also offers an entry into the town’s religious and artistic history. The altarpiece contains a wooden statue of the Madonna di Costantinopoli, completed by Giacomo Colombo in 1695. The Chapel of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli also housed a revered polychrome wooden image of the Madonna and Child from the late 14th century. Traditionally, the earliest evidence of the cult of the Madonna di Costantinopoli in Pietracatella is dated to the 14th century.

The procession of the Madonna della Ricotta is a celebration of the area’s agropastoral culture in Pietracatella. It celebrates this tradition with white carts pulled by sheep and rams. The carts are regarded as a symbol of blessing for fields and animals, making the connection between religious customs and rural life visible.

Trails through Landscape and History

For planning hikes and longer sections of trail, the Via di San Francesco provides a clear reference point. The Pietracatella–Lago di Occhito stage begins in the town center, follows a tratturo southwestwards and then continues to the junction with Provincial Road 115. The Via di San Francesco can be walked at any time of year; it is suitable for cycling outside the winter months. Its route passes through Gambatesa, Pietracatella, Toro, San Giovanni in Galdo, Campobasso, Ripalimosani, Castropignano and Casalciprano in the province of Campobasso.

Another distinctive section of trail is the tratturo at Passo della Vecchia. It runs along the bed of the Tappino and in front of the Brigands’ Caves. Those who follow the trails and mule tracks around Pietracatella may encounter stone farmhouses, abandoned rural buildings with impressive panoramic settings and rural structures amid Saracen olive groves. These features give hiking a historical and landscape dimension, without requiring the individual trails to have the same character.

Orientation also includes looking out across the land: Pietracatella offers views of the Tappino Valley, with Lake Occhito to the east and Campobasso to the west. This makes it possible to consider cultural sites, religious traditions and open landscapes as distinct focal points when planning a trip.
