Rotello: Historic Centre, Olive Oil and Special Experiences

Rotello combines historic buildings, regional food culture and outdoor experiences to create a diverse local character. At its heart are the historic centre shaped by Palazzo Colavecchio, the Fontana Maggiore and several churches representing different chapters of its history. Historic Centre and Notable Buildings

Palazzo Colavecchio dominates the historic centre of Rotello. The building evolved from a defensive structure into a stately residence surrounded by perimeter walls, with a small tower for observation. For your planning, it is important to note that the palazzo is currently inaccessible as a result of the earthquakes of October 2002. Nevertheless, its position within the townscape and its transformation from a defensive structure into a residence make it a central historical point of reference in Rotello.

The Fontana Maggiore provides another focal point. The fountain is made entirely of bronze and is approximately 3.50 metres high. A statue of Ceres, the goddess of fields, harvest and fertility, stands on its central pedestal. It symbolises the strong importance agriculture once had for local activities. Thus, the Fontana Maggiore tells not only of design and material, but also points to an important part of local life.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli was built between 1728 and 1744 in place of an earlier church dedicated to the Annunciation. Its Baroque style is reflected in its three-nave layout and central dome. The Church of San Rocco adds another chapter to the historic picture: it was founded in 1648 as a votive church following the severe plague outbreak of 1646 to 1648, restored in 1913 and reopened for worship in 1914.

Olive Oil and Local Cuisine

Agriculture remains present in Rotello’s culinary identity. Several varieties of olives are grown in the area. Their processing produces high-quality extra virgin olive oil, known and appreciated both in the region and beyond for its organoleptic, that is, sensory, properties. Traditional dishes associated with Rotello include Fusilli a cappelletti, Cacaurozze and Fiadoni. These names represent a cuisine that you can discover not only through individual products, but also through typical dishes.

At the Sagra dell'Olio Novello, the tasting of freshly pressed extra virgin olive oil is combined with traditional dishes and a fireworks display. Il Giardino also offers direct access to local flavours: it provides experiential tours with tastings of local products and holds workshops on making homemade pasta. In this way, Rotello’s culinary character can be combined with regional experiences and artisanal preparation.

Walks and Cultural Experiences

The area near the S. Andrea–Biferno tratturo branch offers numerous opportunities for outdoor excursions and walks. Mappitella Picnic tra gli ulivi adds a communal nature experience with a walk through a centuries-old olive grove. Il Giardino also organises artistic projects and cultural events.
