Ferrazzano: History, Alleyways and Molise’s Local Culture

Ferrazzano combines an old village that has remained almost unchanged with important buildings, sweeping views and a distinctive cuisine. Anyone wishing to discover an Italian town with historic character and regional specialities will find many points of interest in a small area: closely packed houses, winding alleyways, Castello Carafa, the Chiesa dell’Assunta and traditional products from Molise.

An Old Village with Striking Architecture

Ferrazzano’s old village has remained almost unchanged architecturally for centuries. The houses stand close together, while numerous winding alleyways lead uphill and downhill.

Castello Carafa, of Norman origin, stands above the town. After being destroyed in the 1496 earthquake, it was rebuilt between 1498 and 1506. The building was completed at the beginning of the 17th century. The Castello illustrates the 16th-century architectural attempt to transform a rugged, austere medieval fortress into a comfortable aristocratic palace. It is accessible via a stone bridge that replaced a wooden drawbridge.

Church Art and Historical Traces

The Chiesa dell’Assunta preserves architectural elements from the 11th and 12th centuries. An inscription bearing the year 1065 survives above the main portal. The portal itself dates from 1200 and is flanked by slender columns with Corinthian capitals. Inside, the 13th-century pulpit is considered the church’s most important artistic furnishing; it is supported by four columns.

Older traces can also be found beyond the immediate townscape. Remains of megalithic walls have been identified on the northern slopes and in the Torrione area. Large limestone blocks can be seen there in structures dating from before the 17th century. Part of Ferrazzano’s fortification on the lower side of the valley was built near the Tratturo Ponte della Zittola-Lucera, mentioned as early as 1699 and recently rediscovered by the local section of Archeoclub d’Italia.

A Place for Culture and Panoramic Views

The Teatro del Loto is a centre for live performances in Ferrazzano and is dedicated to the exchange of diverse and universal cultures. Its complex is located in Piazza Spensieri, between Castello Carafa and Casa Spensieri. Casa Spensieri is an 18th-century palazzo and houses the town hall. In this area, historic architecture, the public centre of the town and cultural use therefore come together directly.

Ferrazzano lies on a hill and is surrounded by a pine forest. From the hill, the view extends across the Matese and Mainarde mountain ranges to the border with Lazio and beyond to the Maiella. Palazzo Chiarulli complements the historic townscape as a building of particular interest. For walks, there is also an atmospheric footpath connecting Ferrazzano with the provincial capital, Campobasso.

Regional Cuisine with Its Own History

Ferrazzano’s characteristic products include prosciutto, sopressata and salsiccia alla “ferrazzanese”. A special local speciality is Mbaniccia: the dish consists of corn pizza and wild greens seasoned in pork broth. The pizza, wrapped in chestnut leaves, can also be cooked on the hot hearthstone. As a result, alongside the architecture, a specific culinary tradition is also at the heart of the town.

Tintillia is also part of the region’s history. This grape variety was formerly cultivated as a table grape in the inland areas of Molise, in the fields of Ferrazzano and its surroundings, because of its valued qualities. With the rise of mass wine production, it subsequently fell out of use. Ferrazzano therefore showcases not only preserved buildings, but also changes in the area’s agricultural and culinary character.
