Bagnoli Del Trigno: Rocky Massif, History and Molise Festivals

Churches, Tower and Medieval Traces

For a walk through the town, the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta provides a readily accessible historical point of reference: The church has three naves and a flat apse. It is open during the day, and admission is free. Other architectural evidence includes the Casa Romana, a medieval house with a bifora and sculptural reliefs. A bifora is a divided window and gives the building a distinctive detail.

The Chiesa di San Silvestro Papa also reaches far back into the town’s history. It was built in the 13th to 14th century. Particularly striking is the bell tower with its onion-shaped roof made of colorful majolica. Due to its proximity to the Celano-Foggia and Castel di Sangro-Lucera sheep tracks, Castello Sanfelice served as a strategic base for controlling the area.

Festivals from the Christmas Season to Carnival

Bagnoli del Trigno lives out its traditions not only through its buildings. The procession of the “ndocce” takes place during the Christmas season. The burning torches are extinguished with new wine as a wish for a rich harvest. During Carnival, the parade of “Mesi” floats brings the streets of Bagnoli del Trigno to life.

Another regular date is Frammenti d'Antico, which takes place every year on August 18 in Bagnoli del Trigno. During this event, a splendid noble procession led by a duke moves from the castle to the town’s main square. There, the “capifuoco” conduct a mayoral election according to the historical bean-and-bean system. Frammenti d'Antico also serves traditional local dishes such as Scarcio, pappardelle with wild boar sauce, Macciucch and Scattone.

The ninth edition of the artistic Christmas nativity scene at the Museo Delle Tradizioni e Mostra Del Presepe is also part of the town’s more recent visitor history: It could be visited until January 7, 2025, covered 300 square meters and contained numerous references to the symbolism of the Neapolitan nativity scene.

Molise Cuisine and Insights into Agriculture

The “Visita al fattore” experience in the Molise area focuses on the production of regional foods. It includes a visit to a cheese dairy, where you learn how cheese is made. Visitors also meet the farm’s cows and learn more about their role on the farm. As part of the experience, the cheeses produced by the provider are sampled. This offering complements the traditional dishes featured on the menu at Frammenti d'Antico.
