Conca Casale: Mountain Landscape, Churches and Local Festivals

Conca Casale combines mountain landscapes, churches, festivals and regional cuisine. For travel to the area, the road via Venafro and the railway station in Venafro are two separate reference points.

Monte Corno Vettese and the landscape

A large part of the Conca Casale area belongs to the Italian wilderness area network under the name Monte Corno Vettese. The Monte Corno Vettese sector extends from Monte Sammucro via Monte Corno to Monte Santa Croce.

Near Portella, this area contains a limestone formation with a narrow section that is presumably tectonic in origin. It may have formed through the collapse or splitting of a mountain ridge. The formation is therefore characterised both by its rock and by the possible origin of the narrow section.

Churches and historic sites

The Church of Sant’Antonio di Padova in Conca Casale has ancient origins and preserves frescoes inside. Its history and surviving furnishings give the place a clear cultural significance.

The Church of SS. Cosma e Damiano stands on a hill a few hundred metres from the settlement. From there, it offers a good view of the valley and the settlement. The hill thus provides a view extending beyond the church’s immediate location.

Santa Maria delle Fontane is located about 2 km from the centre of Conca Casale. The church preserves a fountain whose water is blessed every year during the celebrations of the Festa della Madonna delle Fontane, held on the second Sunday in May.

Festivals and regional cuisine

The traditional Sagra dei legumi takes place in August. It has already been held more than 30 times and is open to everyone. The August date provides a different seasonal focus alongside the May festival.

La Signora di Conca Casale is a large sausage made from pork that is typical of some mountain areas of Molise.

Routes and historic connections

The ConCammina-Molise route crosses the Site of Community Importance IT7212171 and the “Monte Corno Vettese” Wilderness Area. After the Santa Domenica Pass, the route continues to climb for about 1 km along the northeastern ridge.

The route begins in the upper part of Conca Casale on an old mule track that once served as a connection to Venafro.

The nearby Monte Sammucro contains the remains of polygonal walls within the Conca Casale area. The former monastery of San Domenico stood in isolation on Monte Corno, at the pass of the old route between Conca Casale and Venafro.

Getting there

The road journey from Isernia to Conca Casale follows the SS 85 through Venafro and then continues in the direction of Conca Casale. The nearest railway station to Conca Casale is in Venafro, about 11 km away.
