Filignano Between Valleys and Heights

The Filignano area comprises 12 hamlets spread across three main valleys, from the Filignano basin at 460 m to the first foothills of Monte Marrone at 1,805 m. The three main valleys structure the local landscape between the basin and the mountain foothills. In this way, the local landscape combines wooded areas with clearly stepped elevations. Filignano is also located within the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park.

A provincial road runs through Filignano, crossing an ancient terraced cultural landscape. Beyond the Selvone plateau, it passes through the Rio Chiaro gorge and then opens onto views of the Mainarde at 2,142 m. For a drive through the area, Selvone, the Rio Chiaro, and the Mainarde mark different points along this road. The terraced cultural landscape is followed by the Selvone plateau, the Rio Chiaro gorge, and the views of the Mainarde as further landscape features.

Trails Through the Wooded Landscape

A dense network of trails crosses Filignano’s wooded landscape. The ME1 Cerasuolo Vecchio–Colle Rotondo route complements this landscape theme as a tourist and nature trail in Filignano.

Dry-Stone Walls as a Landscape Feature

Dry-stone walls are a characteristic feature of Filignano’s landscape. They serve to terrace the mountains and provide hydrogeological protection for the area. Long, low, ancient walls also line and cross the grounds of the Varvarusa Golf Club, where they form challenging obstacles. On the mountain slopes, the walls are associated with terraces and their protective function; at the golf course, they are associated with the course’s design and its obstacles.

Churches, Chapels, and Historical Testimonies

Filignano has numerous ancient votive chapels decorated with sacred images on colorful majolica. The Chiesa della Santissima Concezione in Filignano was built in the 18th century at the request of the Duchess of Miranda.

The ancient Church of San Eleuterio is also a historical testimony in Filignano. The ruins of Cerasuolo Vecchio are likewise a historical testimony in Filignano. In the hamlet of Cerasuolo, the Museo Combat Road is located on Via Borgo Rossi. The military history museum is dedicated to the events of the Second World War. Travel via Venafro

For travel by train, the nearest station to Filignano is in Venafro. Local buses connect Venafro with Filignano. Those arriving by public transport should plan on taking a train to Venafro and continuing by local bus to Filignano. The final leg to Filignano is therefore via the designated bus connection.
