Watershed and Two River Directions

San Pietro Avellana lies on the Apennine watershed. Two watercourses with different drainage directions rise in its territory: the Rio stream is a tributary of the Sangro, which flows into the Adriatic Sea. The Vandra River, on the other hand, is a tributary of the Volturno, which flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Truffles in the Forest and at the Markets

At the Museo del Tartufo, a visit to San Pietro Avellana introduces visitors to the tradition of searching for truffles with a dog in the forest. The forest and the dog provide the concrete setting for the search.

The 36th Summer Fair for black truffles in San Pietro Avellana featured stalls with high-quality black truffles and menus with black truffles. The programme also included guided tours, tastings and musical performances. The fair combined the culinary offerings with guided tours, tastings and music.

Further truffle events took place on the second Sunday in August, with a provincial truffle fair, and in November, with a market fair for high-quality white truffles. Events without a fixed date may not take place every year. There is a clear gap in the annual calendar between August and November.

Monte Miglio and Eremo di Sant’Amico

The hike on Monte Miglio follows a path through a beech forest to the Eremo di Sant’Amico. The Eremo di Sant’Amico, a hermitage in the forest of the same name, lies northeast of San Pietro Avellana. A Samnite fortification is also located on Monte Miglio. The hike ends at the Eremo; the fortification is likewise located on Monte Miglio.

Church, Textile Art and Virtual Tour

The parish church of Saints Peter and Paul preserves a parchment document dating from 1548. The parchment document depicts Saint Benedict and Saint Amico.

Traditional textile art continues to be practised in San Pietro Avellana. Colourful blankets are made using old methods, continuing a traditional craft. The Tratturo Celano-Foggia route begins in San Pietro Avellana on Corso Regina Margherita at an elevation of 978 metres above sea level. From there, it heads towards Monte Ingotta. The historic della Ficora forest lies along the route. The starting point on Corso Regina Margherita and the elevation of 978 metres locate the beginning of the route.

Planetarium and Sky Observation

The Osservatorio Astronomico di San Pietro Avellana offers observation evenings. These include a visit to the planetarium, real-time image projections and direct observation of the sky through a telescope. The planetarium and telescope represent two different forms of observation.
