Montacuto on Monte Giarolo: Trails, Forests and History
Montacuto is a small village in Val Curone on the slopes of Monte Giarolo. Its character is shaped by the alternation of cultivated fields, forests and historic buildings. If you are looking for a combination of mountain landscapes, hiking and culture for your trip, the village offers various ways to get to know the surrounding area.
Between fields, forests and mountain trails
In the area around Montacuto, cultivated fields give way to forests, beech woods, trails and pastures that lead up the mountain to the statue of the Redeemer. The mountain Monte Giarolo is located nearby; the mountains Cosfrone, Bagnolo and Monte Ebro are also in the vicinity of Montacuto.
Monte Giarolo has long been a destination for hikers. It can be reached via a dense network of trails from Giarolo, Caldirola, Val Borbera and Valle Staffora. One specific route is the Sentiero Caldirola - Monte Giarolo: it leads uphill through deciduous, coniferous and beech forests to Monte Giarolo, whose summit is dominated by the statue of Cristo Redentore.
On the route “Giarolo (Monte) da Giarolo per la Costa delle Lessaie”, the trail follows red waymarkers along the Costa delle Lessaie. This gives you various points of connection with the landscape around Montacuto, without limiting the village itself to a single experience.
For a day of hiking, this provides two different points of orientation. On the Sentiero Caldirola - Monte Giarolo, the changing deciduous, coniferous and beech forests take centre stage; on the route via the Costa delle Lessaie, red markings accompany the trail. Those who include Montacuto in their plans can therefore choose the route for their day of hiking according to the desired landscape experience or trail markings.
Castle, Oratorio and Regional History
The castle of Montacuto dominates the main village between meadows and pastures. The castle walls associated with the Marchesi Frascaroli rise on an isolated hilltop. The buildings appear to date from the 17th and 18th centuries; the remains of the considerably older original manor house are still visible.
The Oratorio della Madonna dei Campi features two fresco cycles, dated to 1580 and 1635 respectively. The first mention of the Oratorio is dated 5 September 1589. In the Middle Ages, Montacuto, Brignano and Frascata belonged to the so-called “Stato Malspina”.
The Castello di Torre Ratti is also located in the area around Montacuto. The wider regional area is home to the Museo don Carlo Sterpi, the ancient site Area Archeologica ed Espositiva di Libarna and the Palazzo Guidobono. The cultural dimension of a stay therefore extends from the village’s buildings to other historic destinations in the region.
