Historical Traces and Sacred Buildings
Fresonara combines historic buildings, ecclesiastical traditions and rural landscape features. These are joined by traditional festivals, a hiking trail with Roman connections and a civic library with regional collections. This gives you a place whose themes range from architectural history and faith to meadow irrigation, festival culture and local memory.
In 1482, Bernardino Guasco, Lord of Bisio, sold four fifths of the properties to the Trotti family. Among them was the building now known as the Castello. Around 1500, the chapel was considerably enlarged and fitted with its present bell tower; this created the parish church, which is now dedicated to the Natività di Maria Vergine. According to local historian Vernetti's account, a feudal chapel within the walls of Fresonara Castle is said to have served as a church for centuries.
The parish church's bell tower is 28 metres high. The chapel was replastered and decorated with frescoes in 1874. Together, these architectural features lead from the history of ownership through structural changes to a traditional religious use.
Mulberry Trees, Meadows and Paths
There are also specific points of interest beyond the buildings. Fresonara is home to a white mulberry tree (Morus alba L.) with a trunk circumference of 280 centimetres. The monumental Gelso di Fresonara mulberry tree is 9.5 metres tall. This gives the landscape a distinct botanical accent alongside its historical features.
The La via dei prati hiking trail overlaps with the Roman Via Aemilia Scauri along part of its route. In addition, the Bedale was created to irrigate the meadows; the watercourse is also known as Canale Pio V. Thus, alongside the connection to the road, meadow irrigation and the use of the landscape stand as independent themes.
Local Knowledge at the Biblioteca Civica
The Biblioteca Civica in Fresonara holds approximately 4,800 volumes. These include collections on the municipality, neighbouring towns and areas, and Piedmont. The subjects therefore range from the municipality itself and its more closely described surroundings to a broader regional context.
Festivals with Different Accents
Several traditional festivals have different focuses. The Madonna delle Grazie festival, known among local residents as Madonna Nuova, traditionally takes place on the third Sunday in June. The festival of the Natività di Maria Vergine traditionally takes place on 8 September; the Fresonara parish church is dedicated to this Marian festival. Carnevale dei Bambini features masks, games, pranks and a piñata. The festival is associated with Piazza Don Orione and the Teatro Comunale as its venues.
In October, the Il Compleanno di Fresonara programme includes various cultural and musical events, offered free of charge. These festivals and programmes focus on religious tradition, children's carnival, and culture and music.
