Hills, Woods and Trails

Mombello lies in a hilly landscape between oak and chestnut woods. More than 60 km of unpaved roads and numerous smaller trails run through the surrounding area. Many of these routes are frequently signposted for hiking or mountain biking.

One specific trail is “Sulle cime di Mombello”. The circular route starts in the main town’s square in front of the Chiesa di San Sebastiano, is approximately 10 km long and takes about three hours on foot or on horseback, and about two hours by bicycle. It offers panoramic views of the hills of Monferrato and alternates between small villages and the woods of Val Cerrina. The route from Monte Sion to Bric del Lupo is considered one of Mombello’s most impressive trails.

Parco Belvedere is located on the hilltop and offers a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape. From Mombello’s hilltops, the views also extend across the Po Valley and Valcerrina. These varied landscapes make the area interesting for you if, on a journey through Monferrato, you would like to combine trails, woodland sections and open long-distance views.

Churches and Historical Traces

The Chiesa di San Bononio was rebuilt in 1200 on the walls of a Roman temple. The present building dates from 1724. Form panels depicting a lion-dragon, a sacred eagle and a bull with three bucrania are visible on the church.

The Palazzo dell'Aglio is an 18th-century building where Count Cavour was a guest. Today, the palazzo is privately owned and used as a residence. The ruins of Castello di Mombello lie on the summit of a steep hill crossed by three streams. The castle was partially destroyed between 1300 and 1400 and was made habitable again by Bartolomeo Malaspina from the end of the 16th century onward.

Religious traditions are also part of the area’s history. The Chiesetta di Sant'Anna is associated with the legend of the Madonna del Bricco. The Santuario di San Gottardo is dedicated to Saint Gotthard, who has been venerated in a small votive chapel since the 17th century. According to tradition, he saved a child from a pair of runaway oxen.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The “Sagra del cinghiale” usually takes place in August. Towards the end of October, Mombello holds a chestnut festival dedicated to chestnuts, where porcini mushrooms are also offered.
