Gamalero: Trails, History and Local Life

Gamalero reveals itself through trails, green spaces, markets and historic buildings. The Strada Franca del Monferrato is a long-distance trail through plains and low hills; it passes through ten municipalities in the Province of Alessandria, including Gamalero.

Trails through the Bormida Floodplain

The Sentiero dei Cinque Ponti runs entirely through the Bormida floodplain. Along the trail are the preserved remains of Castel Merlino, which are considered the only surviving evidence after the former castle was demolished in 1802. The Sentiero also provides information about the Canale Carlo Alberto, which was built between 1833 and 1839. A market with food and clothing stalls takes place in Gamalero town centre on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The Feste Patronali di San Lorenzo are celebrated every year on 10 August. The Festival di San Lorenzo features book presentations, meetings with authors, theatre performances, concerts and exhibitions. Churches and Historic Places

The Church of San Rocco in the San Rocco district was built in 1789. In the Cascinali Spassona area there is a second chapel dedicated to San Rocco. It is associated with the cult of this saint as a protector against epidemics, particularly with the period following the plague of 1630. The Church of San Lorenzo in Gamalero was built in 1515 to extend the former Church of Santa Maria. The Oratorio di San Sebastiano e della Santissima Trinità was built in 1665 on the site of a former parish church and was the seat of the Brotherhood of the Santissima Trinità.

The historic Palazzo Piccini is also part of the local orientation: the building at Piazza Aldo Moro 3 houses the Biblioteca Civica di Gamalero, which occupies around 130 m² there.
