Sant'Agata Fossili: Geology, Churches and Historic Buildings

Sant'Agata Fossili combines geological features with churches, medieval buildings and a winemaking tradition. Below the settlement, the view opens onto the Earth's history, while Sant'Agata Fossili, Podigliano and Torre Sterpi reveal different traces of religious and historical development. This creates a destination whose character unfolds through nature, architectural heritage and regional cuisine.

Geology along the Rio Mazzapiedi

The name component “Fossili” was added in 1863 after fossils from the Middle Miocene had been repeatedly found in the marls of Sant'Agata. Below the settlement of Sant'Agata Fossili, the type section of the Marne di Sant'Agata Fossili Formation is visible along the Rio Mazzapiedi. The formation comprises blue-grey marls from the Tortonian to the Messinian, which in the lower section alternate in places with sandy-conglomeratic deposits.

The outcrop along the Rio Mazzapiedi contains a diverse fossil macrofauna with snails, mussels and isolated corals. A short geological trail begins in the settlement of Sant'Agata Fossili. If you are interested in natural history and geological connections, you will find two distinct starting points for planning here: the visible outcrop and the trail with its geological focus.

Churches and Medieval Traces

The Chiesa di Sant'Agata was built between 1500 and 1575. The Chiesa di Sant'Agata, the parish church of Sant'Agata, preserves an old chapel decorated with numerous frescoes. The frescoes include a depiction of the martyrdom of the saint. The patronal feast in honour of Saint Agatha is celebrated on 5 February.

In the higher part of Sant'Agata Fossili stands a solid building known as the Castello. The medieval building was constructed as a monk's cell.

Podigliano is now a district of Sant'Agata Fossili and was historically one of the five castellanies of the diocese. At the beginning of the 14th century, the Castello di Podigliano served as a refuge for Guelphs fleeing Tortona. The district's historical significance therefore extends beyond individual buildings and leads to the political and religious contexts of its former role.

The Church of San Michele in Podigliano contains a chancel fresco of the Madonna enthroned with the Child, probably created in 1603 and attributed to Barattini. The statue of Saint Michael in Podigliano was restored in 1827; the building of the Church of San Michele was restored in 1964. In Torre Sterpi, the small church of Madonna della Guardia bears an inscription dated 30 May 1893 and naming Giuseppe Pernigotti as its founder.

Wine and Regional Impressions

Wine from the vineyards of Locanda del Barco – Varvanera, Invè and Costa Mezzana – can be tasted and purchased at the agriturismo. This specific connection to the vineyards complements the geological and cultural-historical themes with an enjoyable aspect. If you like to divide your days between landscapes, architectural history and regional wine, Sant'Agata Fossili offers several clearly distinct areas of interest.
