Valenza between Jewellery Craft, Cathedral and Po Landscape

Valenza combines an internationally renowned jewellery tradition with sacred art and a landscape shaped by the Po, rice-growing areas and hills. Goldsmithing as Part of the City’s History

Valenza is one of the world’s most important production centres for high-quality jewellery and goldsmithing. The integrated goldsmithing production chain encompasses design, modelling, setting, polishing and quality control. These work steps often take place within the same area. This means that the local jewellery culture can be explored not only through finished objects, but also through the sequence of skilled activities involved in their production.

The MOD – Museo dell’Oreficeria Diffuso – tells Valenza’s historical identity through several physical and virtual locations. These locations are connected by a thematic tour. At present, the first three MOD stations can be visited in Valenza’s historic centre. One station is located in the ancient San Domenico complex, which formerly housed the Carducci primary school. There, the MOD exhibition presents a reconstruction of an early-20th-century goldsmith’s workshop. This gives visitors interested in culture a direct thematic introduction to the city’s craft heritage.

Cathedral, Reconstruction and Sacred Art

Another focal point is the Duomo di Santa Maria Maggiore. Its present architectural form dates back to a reconstruction. This was decided at the beginning of the 17th century and entrusted to the architect Paolo Falcone from Lugano. The cathedral also houses the painting Madonna del Rosario by Guglielmo Caccia (Il Moncalvo), dating from 1620.

The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo is also part of the cathedral. It preserves a collection of paintings, sculptures, sacred furnishings, liturgical vestments and liturgical vessels from the cathedral. The collection is housed in the church sacristy and is opened on request.

The Po, Rice Fields and a Marshland Habitat

The area around Valenza encompasses three important landscapes: the Po, the rice-growing areas and the hills. The Riserva naturale della Garzaia di Valenza nature reserve, established by Regional Law No. 51 of 1979, offers a particular connection to nature. Of the region’s currently active heron colonies, the Garzaia di Valenza is the only one located in an exclusively marshland habitat.

The Cascina Belvedere visitor centre is located near the Valenza bridge and is the site of the Riserva naturale della Garzaia di Valenza. Guided visits on foot or by bicycle can be organised there, accompanied by park rangers and nature guides.
