Discover Camerano Casasco: Castle, Hiking Trails and Culture

Camerano Casasco combines its castle site with sacred art, trails through nature and several regional cultural attractions. If you are looking for a place with historical traces and various opportunities for walks and sightseeing, the defining themes are closely connected here: medieval architectural remains, Baroque furnishings, protected landscapes and excursion destinations both nearby and farther afield.

Castle Site, Church and Historical Testimony

At the site of the castle of Camerano, a recently restored tunnel leads from the castle courtyard to the foot of the old walls and to underground rooms that are still being restored. An old, fully functional wood-fired oven is built into the castle’s retaining wall. The oven rooms contain objects related to breadmaking and rural life. The square at the castle site also features an amphitheatre, which is used in summer for performances, events and festivals.

The Church of San Lorenzo in Camerano Casasco was commissioned by the Asinari family. Its elaborate stucco decorations were created by craftsmen from the Lugano area between 1630 and 1640. The Castello di Piea, a castle, is located nearby. The Arazzeria Scassa Museum, the “San Giovanni” Diocesan Museum and the Palazzo Mazzola are also located in the area around Camerano Casasco.

Natural Areas and Trails

Part of the municipality of Camerano Casasco lies within the Riserva Naturale della Valle Andona, Valle Botto e Val Grande nature reserve. The protected area was expanded in 2003 to approximately 930 hectares. Camerano Casasco is also home to a fossil site with a still-visible shell-affinity outcrop. It extends for approximately 20 metres and is at least seven metres high.

The Sentiero dei contadini is considered a scenic walking trail through forests, scrubland and hazelnut groves. As a hiking trail, it is 3 kilometres long and leads from Camerano Casasco to Chiusano. Trail 301 of the Astigian Romanesque Route runs along the hillside towards Camerano Casasco. The starting point of the “Le terre di Camerano Casasco” trail is also located near Camerano Casasco. The different routes and lengths provide several specific options for planning a peaceful day focused on the landscape.
