Camerana: Historic Tower, Via del Sale and Nature

Camerana and Its Visible History

Camerana’s square tower is still visible as a keep and the center of the historic defensive system. Camerana Castle was demolished in 1930; the surviving tower was restored in the 1980s. Standing approximately 30 m high, it offers views over the Bormida Valley and the historic village of Villa. This provides you with a clear first introduction to the history of the place: a single structure preserves the memory of a larger castle complex while also remaining connected to the landscape of the valley.

Sacred Architecture with Special Details

The churches of Camerana also offer tangible points of interest for a culture-focused stay. The Chiesa dell'Annunziata has a single-nave interior built entirely of stone. The main altar of the Chiesa della SS Annunziata is made of multicolored marble with mosaic detailing and dates from 1711. If architecture and craftsmanship are important to you when traveling, you will find different materials and architectural forms here that can be appreciated without extensive prior knowledge of the subject.

Historic Routes Around Camerana

The local route La salinera, also known as Sarinera, connects the Costa area with the Settevie crossroads on the border between Camerana, Mombarcaro and Monesiglio. It belongs to the historic network of the Via del Sale. The route is therefore part of a broader historical context, without any need to assess its current use or accessibility beyond that. The Pilone del Foresto is also located along the Via del Sale. It is a votive pillar at a crossroads on the historic route that connected Liguria and Piedmont.

Nature Reserve and Landscape

The Riserva Naturale delle Sorgenti del Belbo nature reserve is located partly in Camerana. It protects a hilly plateau with rare seasonal wetlands and shapes a landscape that can be appreciated well beyond its individual structures. The area offers opportunities for excursions, horseback riding and mountain biking. For your planning, this combination of protected natural space and various activities is particularly interesting if you do not want to experience culture and landscape separately.

Circular Route and Viewpoint

The Camerana circular route on the Strada Romantica is available for cycling and trekking tours. It is 11.4 km long, of moderate difficulty, and suitable for trekking, mountain biking and e-bikes.

The Camerana stop on the Strada Romantica is a viewpoint at the foot of the tower. It can be reached on foot or by car from the central square of the Villa district. This makes it possible to connect a specific stopping point with the historic tower and the Villa district: you can include the view in your orientation on site while also understanding the spatial relationship between the square, stop and tower.
