Guarene among Roero Hills and History

Guarene combines the hills of Roero with historic churches, art and distinctive viewpoints. The range extends from an easy circular trail and historic religious buildings to contemporary art and a local tradition.

Trails and Views in Roero

The Sentiero dell’Incanto is a 5 km panoramic circular trail around the historic village of Guarene. The trail is considered easy and is also suitable for families. It leads through the Roero hills and offers views of the Tanaro and the Langhe. The five kilometres can be included in your daily itinerary as a walk in Guarene in its own right.

The Sentiero dell’Acino begins in Guarene on Via Alessandro Roero, at the start of the road leading to the castle. In its most panoramic section, the view first opens onto the hills of the Astigiano area, with the villages of Magliano Alfieri and Govone in the background, and beyond them onto the Langhe.

The Sentiero dei Mulini also touches Guarene: on the section within the municipal area, it runs along the road beside the mill canal. For longer stretches, the road there is called Strada Valmorterra, Strada Comunale del Lavandaro and Via Sotteri. Variant 6A of the Roero Bike Tour also connects the settlements of Castagnito and Guarene located on the ridges and offers views of Roero and the Langhe opposite.

Churches, Art and Local Culture

The Church of SS. Annunziata was declared an important monument of art and history in 1909. It is also an influential example of Piedmontese Baroque, particularly for the perspective art applied to quadratura painting. Thanks to an agreement between the municipality and the diocesan curia, it can host concerts, exhibitions, conferences and other cultural events.

The Church of San Michele is the oldest religious building in Guarene; its history can be traced back to 1379. Construction work on the present-day Castello di Guarene began in 1726.

The collection of the Pinacoteca del Roero consists almost entirely of paintings by important representatives of contemporary Piedmontese art. On the Collina di San Licerio, there is also an open-air museum created by the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, featuring the permanent installation Flat Earth Visa 2019 by Canadian artist Paul Kneale.

Local culture includes Cantè j’euv, a tradition of collecting eggs on the Saturday before Palm Sunday. Groups of young people walk among the farmsteads, singing and inviting the householders to come out and give them a few eggs.

Getting to Guarene

Guarene can be reached via the A33 Asti–Cuneo motorway, taking the Castagnito exit.
