Canove between the Plain and Village Squares

Canove lies on the plain along the Alba–Asti state road. The SS. Annunziata church stands on Canove’s main square; the Monumento ai Caduti e dispersi di Canove is located on the village square. Canove is a hamlet of Govone.

Churches with a Clear History

The SS. Annunziata in the hamlet of Canove is one of Govone’s significant religious buildings. The church has been documented since 1662 and was initially dedicated to San Giorgio. In 1744, it received its present dedication to the Santissima Annunziata for the first time. Mass is celebrated there on Sundays. Cappella San Rocco is located on Via Tanaro; it has been documented since 1620. The two religious buildings have different names: SS. Annunziata and San Rocco. The change from San Giorgio to the present dedication to the Santissima Annunziata is part of the history of the church in Canove.

Pantalera and Canove’s Festivals

Every year, the Sferisterio of Canove hosts Pantalera tournaments between local teams. In Canove di Govone, a well-known Pantalera tournament has been held on summer evenings for almost half a century. The Sferisterio is also associated with traditional Pallapugno. The annual Sagra di Canove takes place in the second week of September around the local Sferisterio. For a trip focused on events, the Pantalera summer evenings and the Sagra week fall in different periods; those who include both occasions should therefore plan two seasonal travel periods. Both events relate to the same Sferisterio: Pantalera tournaments and the Sagra di Canove.

A Memorial on the Village Square

The Monumento ai Caduti e dispersi di Canove is a bronze statue of an Alpini soldier supporting a mortally wounded comrade. The Monumento ai Caduti e dispersi di Canove is not a religious building, but a bronze statue on the village square.

Cycling in the Direction of Canove

On Stage 7 of the Roero Bike Tour, the route runs from Govone to Castagnito. It is 22.5 km long, offers a 2-km variant and has a difficulty rating of MC. On this stage, the route descends towards Canove along a narrow paved road, offering beautiful views of Govone and the Tanaro Plain. The start and finish of the stage are Govone and Castagnito; the descending section leads in the direction of Canove.

Everyday Life and Local Orientation

For practical orientation, Canove has a post office, a doctor’s office in the former school building, as well as shops, bars and a restaurant. This means that, alongside religious and cultural attractions, you will also find practical everyday facilities in the village.
