Garessio combines medieval traces, religious traditions and trails through an impressive mountain landscape. Churches, Castles and Layers of History

The Confraternita di San Giovanni was built in the second half of the 16th century and completed in 1593. The history of Santa Maria Extra Moenia reaches back even further: the first building was constructed around the year 1000. A Gothic portal, several columns from the interior naves and a few traces of medieval painting have been preserved. In Garessio, therefore, you encounter not only individual buildings but also visible fragments from various historical epochs.

Several stages of development come together at Castello di Casotto. The building began as a Carthusian monastery and was founded in the 11th century. In the 19th century, the House of Savoy bought it and converted it into a hunting lodge. Access to Castello di Casotto is permitted only as part of a guided tour. The ruins of Castello di Garessio are believed to date from the 12th century. Porta Rose was an entrance to the old district of Garessio, which could be reached via a drawbridge between two towers; one of the towers is still visible.

The paths leading to the historical traces are also part of the experience. A trail with several switchbacks leads from the last houses of Garessio to the old entrance gate of the castle walls and to a grassy area surrounded by old walls. The combination of ascent, remnants of walls and open terrain makes this section particularly interesting for visitors who do not seek history exclusively indoors.

Museums and Religious Traditions

The Museo Civico di Garessio displays objects made of stone, fired clay, glass and iron, and explains the production techniques used for them from prehistoric times to the end of antiquity. Its archaeological department focuses on production cycles from prehistoric and historical periods. Since 1962, the historic Votive Museum has been housed in the former Santuario della Beata Vergine delle Grazie. Another special feature is the Mortorio: it is repeated approximately every four years and has shaped Garessio’s Easter tradition since around the middle of the 18th century.

The religious history also extends beyond the individual town. On May 1, all the parishes of Alta Val Tanaro take part in a walking pilgrimage to the sanctuary. This date therefore provides a clear cultural point of reference for planning your trip, while museums, churches and historic sites offer various ways of exploring the area’s history, independently of such a tradition.

Walking Trails, Peaks and Winter Experiences

The Strada del San Mauro follows the Rio San Mauro, leads from the medieval Ricetto through Porta Jhape and climbs to Colle San Bernardo. Another walking trail to Pieve di San Costanzo passes the ruins of an 11th-century Romanesque church. At the summit of Bric Mindino, the trail reaches 1,879 meters. A monumental iron cross stands there, and the view extends all around to the horizon.

For a shorter outing, a cascade surrounded by greenery in the valley is a good option; it can be reached via a pleasant walk of approximately half an hour. Garessio 2000 is a ski resort with 12 kilometers of ski runs of varying difficulty. In Garessio, you can therefore combine cultural sightseeing, longer trails and alpine activities according to your own interests.
