Castellinaldo between Cultural Heritage, Wine and the Roero Bike Tour

Castellinaldo brings together several perspectives for a trip to Italy in a compact setting: the fortified core in the town centre points to a history dating back to 1041, churches preserve remarkable artworks and frescoes, while the enoteca and wine tasting connect the town with wine through its historic cellars and vineyards. Historical Traces and Sacred Art

The fortified core lies at the highest point of Castellinaldo’s town centre, known as “Monfortino”. It is mentioned in an imperial charter issued by Henry III for the Bishop of Asti in 1041. Another historic site is the Chiesa della Confraternita dei Disciplinati, which was rebuilt between 1700 and 1702. Inside, there is an 18th-century wooden relief and a fresco on the vault dating from the last quarter of the 19th century. Both depict the Shroud of Turin. The church is the only place of worship in the Diocese of Alba explicitly dedicated to the Holy Shroud.

The ballroom of Castello Damiano is another tangible example of Castellinaldo’s cultural heritage: the building preserves frescoes by Rodolfo Morgari. For a trip centred on architecture, local history and sacred art, this offers several different perspectives without reducing the town to a single attraction.

Elevated Sites, Paths and Panoramas

The Chiesa di San Servasio stands on a hill known as a “bric”. It is visible from a distance on the Roero horizon and overlooks old paths. The Chiesa di San Servasio offers extensive panoramas, particularly towards the west.

North of Castellinaldo, the Chiesa di San Cristoforo stands on a ridge. The small building has no bell tower. Together with San Servasio, it forms part of a townscape in which sacred buildings can be found not only within the fortified core but also at elevated points in the landscape.

Wine in the Cellar and Vineyards

The Enoteca comunale of Castellinaldo was established by the winemakers of Castellinaldo in the old cellars of the castle. The wine tasting includes a guided tour through the vineyards of Castellinaldo and the historic cellar of the winery. For planning purposes, the wine theme can therefore be considered in two parts: the landscape of the vineyards and the atmosphere of the historic cellar.

The RBT as a Cycling Theme

Castellinaldo is part of the RBT – Roero Bike Tour route. The route is 75% nature-oriented and 25% paved.
