Pietraporzio between sheep-farming traditions, mountain trails and woodland landscapes

Pietraporzio reveals its character through a combination of mountain landscapes, small hamlets and unusually tangible traces of local history. Among fir forests, the Stura River, trails and historic structures, you will encounter both the natural environment of the upper valley and the traditions of sheep farming.

The landscape around Pietraporzio

Pietraporzio lies at the foot of the mixed fir forests that define the upper valley, beside a weir on the Stura River. In the surrounding area, the hamlet of Pontebernardo is overlooked by the Barricate Gorge. Its high, sheer limestone walls drop steeply towards the road, giving the landscape a distinctive geological character. The hamlet, located on the orographically right-hand side of the Stura, also contains remains of medieval arches and cornerstones made of tuff.

Hiking and ski mountaineering

For active days, Pietraporzio offers hikes of varying difficulty starting from the town centre and from the hamlets of Pontebernardo, Murenz and Castello. Pietraporzio also offers several ski-mountaineering routes, including the best-known one to Testa di Costabella del Piz. Another local connection is a 900-metre-long nature trail: it connects the Pontebernardo camper area with Pietraporzio on foot or by bicycle. This allows you to include different landscape impressions and starting points in your personal day plan.

Church and campanile

The parish church of Santo Stefano was built from 1787 and completed in 1792. Its single-nave interior has four side chapels. Near the Pietraporzio cemetery stands the Campanile dei "Catre Loupes", the only surviving part of the old parish church. The name Campanile dei Catre Loups is traditionally attributed to the animal figures at its top. Both names are among the distinctive names you will encounter when exploring the area.

Sheep farming and cheese-making traditions

In Pontebernardo, a hamlet of Pietraporzio, the Ecomuseo della Pastorizia presents local sheep-farming traditions and the revival of Sambucana sheep breeding. The ecomuseum includes the Na Draio per Viours museum trail, which provides information about sheep breeding and farming. The ecomuseum also includes a small cheese dairy where school classes can watch sheep's cheese being made. In this way, exploring the landscape is complemented by a tangible culinary and agricultural aspect of the area.

Special details along the way

A majestic centuries-old larch, known in the local dialect as „lou Merze gros“, is a quiet focal point. Together with the medieval arches, tuff stones, campanile and Barricate Gorge, it creates a townscape in which nature and inherited traces stand closely side by side.
