Peveragno – History, Trails and Bisalta

Historic townscapes, surrounding trails and a local festival shape the themes through which Peveragno can be explored. Trails around Peveragno

To help people find their way along the main trails around Peveragno, the municipal administration installed vertical signposts. It was supported in this by hiking enthusiasts, asylum seekers accommodated in the town and the Enjoy Bisalta association. The initiative is therefore just as much a part of the municipality’s character as the various trail connections, which include walks, mountain-bike routes and excursions.

The Cappella e Collina di San Giorgio is connected with Peveragno by a walking route. The MTB routes include one leading to Fontana Cappa. The municipal excursions also include a route from San Giovenale di Peveragno via the Miniera d’uranio and Fontana Cappa to Cima Besimauda and Cima Costa Rossa. Fontana Cappa also features on the route through Bisalta. The higher elevations of Bisalta offer rewarding excursions for experienced day hikers.

Historic places and medieval structures

Castelvecchio can be reached from Via Ciarma after about a 15-minute walk. Castelvecchio was a fortified village dating from the Late Roman period, specifically the 4th century AD. This provides a direct route connection to a place whose history reaches back to Late Antiquity.

Forfice was a medieval settlement consisting of a castrum, a villa and an unfortified borgo. The Ricetto is the highest and most heavily fortified part of Peveragno. Both examples represent different forms of historic settlement and fortification structures.

The Ricetto in Peveragno can be traced back to 1362; the municipal statutes discuss it in greater detail. The portal has a stone base about three metres high, above which is a pointed arch and a series of frescoes, most of which have disappeared.

The Church of Santa Maria del Paschero is documented from a deed of allegiance issued on 26 October 1396. Together with Castelvecchio, Forfice and the Ricetto, it broadens the historical view of Peveragno with several clearly distinct sites.

Local life in early June

The Sagra della Fragola has been held annually in early June since 1954. It celebrates the most important local product with markets selling typical products and handicrafts, as well as tastings.
