Sparone: Rocca, craftsmanship and paths in the Orco Valley

Rocca di Arduino and its history

Rocca di Arduino already existed before the year 1000 and dominates the road into the upper Orco Valley. In an imperial deed of confiscation and donation issued by Otto, it appears as an Arduinid possession. Its historical significance is also reflected in an event from 1004: The margrave of Ivrea and his army sought refuge in Rocca di Sparone and successfully resisted the besieging army of Emperor Henry II of Germany there. Church, frescoes and local material culture

The Chiesa di Santa Croce is dated to around 1025. In the apse area, it has uncovered frescoes dated to the period from the late 14th to the early 15th century. La Fucina dei mestoli offers another way of accessing the past. The exhibition space is dedicated to local material culture and traditional craftwork. It preserves an extensive collection of original tools and machines; some of these items date back to the 16th century. Sparone can therefore be viewed not only through its military history, but also through work and craftsmanship.

Portals, mills and historic paths

At Casa forte di Pertia, medieval trilithic portals and distinctive, imposing herringbone-patterned stonework can be seen. Near the course of the Roggia delle Fucine, also known as Roggia del Mulino, several grain mills and several copper forges were already in operation from the 16th century onward. The Vecchia mulattiera per Frachiamo begins in Borgata Peretti. Masons from Frachiamo built this path in 1872 with the support of their wives. These individual places preserve different traces of defense, craftsmanship, supply and former connections between the settlements.

Forest route and activities in the surrounding area

The route to Cima Arbella leads through chestnut, beech and birch forests. Along the way, it first passes the alpine pastures of Paramea and then Magna Fioria. Canyoning in Sparone is a technical, vertical torrentism activity in rocky gorges, with spectacular and challenging rappelling sections along high waterfalls and steep walls. The Pista ciclabile offers a different pace. Descents and climbs alternate along it; at the same time, it is suitable for a walk in green surroundings. Depending on your personal interests, you can give different weight to historic sites, forest landscapes and sporting activities.
