Baceno: Orrido Sud, mountain peaks and Alpine culture

Baceno lies at the confluence of the three valleys of Devero, Antigorio and Formazza. In the Middle Ages, the town played an important role for Alta Val d’Ossola due to its strategic location. Gorge and surrounding peaks

The Orrido Sud gorge, which is open to visitors, is approximately 200 metres long and 20 to 30 metres deep. It has been equipped with metal stairways and information panels for visitors. The approximate dimensions and the stairway system are relevant when planning your time on site. This allows you to plan the gorge as a separate landscape section alongside the museums and churches.

The peak of La Pizzetta is located in the immediate vicinity of Baceno. Pizzo Nava is also nearby. Corona Troggi and Pizzo Cortefreddo are peaks in the area around Baceno. This gives you four specific mountain names to consider when planning the landscape around the town.

Waterfall and Alpine history

Alpine farming and sacred culture

The Museo dell’Alpeggio documents Alpine farming activities with a video room, traditional tools, visual material and explanatory panels. In the wider regional surroundings of Baceno, Gmeinalp lies in ruins. The Parrocchia Ss. Gervasio E Protasio and the Chiesa Parrocchiale della Beata Vergine del Rosario are also located in this area. This regional extension therefore includes one ruin and two churches.
