Decimomannu among Churches, Bridges and Festival Traditions

Decimomannu brings together churches, Roman and early medieval traces, bridges amid cultivated fields, and the festival tradition of Santa Greca. The built-up areas range from the landscaped main piazza in the centre to the edge of the built-up area. In addition, there is a municipal park, a railway station with five tracks for passenger traffic, and specific route sections via roads, a railway underpass and short walks. The destinations are therefore located not only in central squares, but also on the edge of the settlement and in the countryside.

Churches in the Centre and on the Edge of the Settlement

The parish church of Sant’Antonio Abate is located in the centre of Decimomannu on the landscaped main piazza. It was built in the Catalan Gothic style. The Church of Santa Greca, by contrast, stands on a spacious square at the edge of the built-up area of Decimomannu. For orientation within the town, the names remain distinct: Sant’Antonio Abate refers to the parish church on the main piazza, while Santa Greca refers to the church on the edge of the built-up area.

Roman Roads and Punic Finds

The Roman Via Caralis–Sulcis (Sant’Antioco) ran through Decimum in Roman times. There was also a necropolis in the Decimomannu area, where bronze Punic coins were found. The Roman road, the Punic coins and the bridge thus link Roman, Punic, and late antique or early medieval periods.

Is Aramigus in the Countryside

The Is Aramigus Bridge, also known as Ponte de su Tiaulu, is a single-arch bridge over the Rio Concias amid cultivated fields. It is considered a structure from the late antique or early medieval period. The two names Is Aramigus and Ponte de su Tiaulu refer to the same bridge structure.

Park and Festival of Santa Greca

The Parco urbano comunale, also known as Parco di Santa Greca, has facilities, children’s play equipment and a refreshment point. The Santa Greca festival is celebrated in Decimomannu twice a year: in May as Sant’Arega di Maggio and on the last weekend of September as Sant’Arega Manna. Santa Greca is simultaneously the name of the church, part of the park’s name and part of the festival designation. For annual planning, the two celebrations take place at different times: one in May and the other on the last weekend of September.

Access and Railway Station

The Is Aramigus Bridge is accessed via the SS 130 towards Iglesias. After parking the car, there are still approximately 30 metres to walk. The route to Ponte Romano Bingia Manna leads via Via Flumini Mannu, a railway underpass and Via Ponte Romano. From the end of the road, a further 100 metres must then be covered on foot. Decimomannu railway station has a total of five tracks for passenger traffic. For planning the day, the routes to the two bridges differ in their sequence of roads and the respective starting point of the walk. The approximately 30-metre and 100-metre sections remain separate walking sections.
