Sestu Among Churches, Early History and Landscape

Sestu combines sacred architecture, rural architecture, traces of prehistoric settlements and a distinctive landscape. This creates a place where you can view different aspects of Sardinia’s history side by side: from a late Gothic church and mud-brick houses to archaeological sites and a wetland.

Churches with Their Own Historical Traces

The Church of San Giorgio Martire is considered one of the most interesting late Gothic buildings in southern Sardinia. The central section was built in the first half of the 16th century. A milestone from the Roman imperial period was also found in the church in 1957.

The Church of San Gemiliano stands in open countryside about five kilometres north of Sestu. It has a rectangular layout with two adjoining naves, separate entrances and independent apses. This clearly structured design makes the church interesting also for visitors who wish to examine architectural details and historical connections more closely.

Architecture and Traces of Early Settlement

Casa Ofelia was built by Giuseppe Marras in 1901. The building is a traditional rural house of the Campidano made from mud bricks known as "ladiri". Casa Ofelia follows the typical L-shaped layout of a Campidanese courtyard house and therefore represents a regionally distinctive architectural style.

The prehistoric village of San Gemiliano consists of numerous huts. It is dated from the Late Neolithic period of the Ozieri culture through to the second Copper Age of the Monte Claro culture. Its chronological classification thus leads through several prehistoric cultural phases and complements the more recent evidence of sacred and rural architecture.

Craviole Paderi is a significant prehistoric site in the Sestu area. Finds from the Bonnanaro culture, dating from the Early Bronze Age, were discovered there. A Punic-Roman necropolis is also located on Corso Italia in Sestu, where household pottery dating from the 3rd century BC was found.

Nature and Festival Culture

Stani Saliu lies in a closed depression that has a water surface of around 30,000 m² at maximum water level. The Stani Saliu wetland is considered one of the few sites of its kind still preserved in the Mediterranean region. For those interested in nature, this makes the site a clearly defined focus within Sestu’s diverse range of attractions.

The festival in honour of San Gemiliano is celebrated from 2 September to 7 September with numerous religious and civic events. If you plan your trip for this period, a fixed-date occasion is therefore part of Sestu’s cultural side alongside its architectural and settlement history.

When choosing a hotel or other accommodation for your trip to Sestu, you can use this personal focus as a guide and divide your stay accordingly between history, landscape and events.
