Monte Nai and the beginning of Costa Rei
Spiaggia delle Ginestre is located in Monte Nai, in the municipality of Muravera. At the same time, it is the first section of Costa Rei on the Muravera coast. A striking feature of the coast is Scoglio di Peppino. The natural rock is approximately 80 metres long and 25 metres wide. It consists of light-coloured granite smoothed by waves and wind, and has a shape reminiscent of a diving turtle. Bathers climb onto the rock to admire the panorama and jump into the water. Scoglio di Peppino thus combines an unusual rock formation with a recreational activity practised by the sea.
Capo Ferrato: geological history and hiking
In the nearby area of Capoferrato, the Capoferrato Geological Trail is signposted with signs from the Ente Foreste. The trail presents important stages in Sardinia’s geological history and passes granite rocks in the form of tafoni and tors. The menhirs of Nuraghe Scalas and Cuile Piras
The megalithic sites in the area around Monte Nai also give the region a distinctive historical profile. The Menhir di Nuraghe Scalas complex comprises 43 menhirs. They are arranged in groups and rows of three, four or five elements. The menhirs of Nuraghe Scalas have been interpreted as a stone calendar for determining seasonal cycles. This interpretation remains an explanation of their possible function and makes the site particularly interesting for visitors who are interested in Sardinia’s early history.
The Cuile Piras megalithic complex comprises 53 menhirs. They stand in rows of three to five elements around a central grouping. Together with Nuraghe Scalas, Cuile Piras demonstrates how larger stone arrangements can be organised in different ways, without the two sites having to be combined into a single location. Between the coast, geology and prehistoric monuments, this creates a destination whose impressions extend far beyond the beach.
