Muravera between crafts, lagoons and coastline

Muravera combines historic landmarks in the town centre with surrounding landscapes, including citrus orchards, lagoons, beaches and river courses. If you would like to get to know a place through specific buildings, crafts and nature, the range of themes extends from Gothic-Catalan architecture, museums and murals to a coastal fortification and kayaking excursions.

Historic Centre and Crafts

In Muravera’s historic centre stands the Chiesa di San Nicola di Bari. The church was built in the Gothic-Catalan style between the 15th and 16th centuries. Also in the historic centre is the Portico Petretto, a stone monument built in the 17th century and recently restored, formerly known as “su crocciu”.

La Domu de is candelajus, also known as La Casa dei candelai, is an ethnographic museum and workshop museum housed in the home of craftswoman Zia Savina. It showcases traditional textile techniques from weaving to dyeing, as well as embroidery, basket weaving and the handcrafted production of votive candles. The Museo Donna Sulis, part of the MIF – Musei dell’imprenditoria femminile museum system, is housed in Muravera’s former Carabinieri barracks.

The murals of Muravera depict colourful scenes of local clothing, occupations and ancient traditions associated with agriculture and pastoral life. Donna Francesca Sanna Sulis played a key role in introducing extensive silkworm farming with mulberry trees in Muravera and organised spinning and loom-weaving courses for the town’s women.

Citrus Products and Local Expressions

The Sagra degli Agrumi in Muravera is a festival showcasing citrus products and other local produce. At the festival, handcrafted traditional costumes, filigree jewellery, carpets and tapestries are displayed in the streets of Muravera.

Lagoons, Dunes and Coastal Fortification

The Muravera area includes extensive citrus orchards; the landscape also features crystal-clear sea and beautiful beaches. The lagoons of Muravera are overlooked by imposing towers that bear witness to a history spanning thousands of years. About six kilometres from the town stands the Torre delle Saline, an ancient coastal fortification with a square ground plan. Among the towers of Sardinia’s coastal defence system, it is the only one with this ground plan.

Around the Torre delle Saline, the beach has golden-ochre sand, dunes with sea lilies and Mediterranean maquis behind them.

Kayaking Excursions in the Surrounding Area

For trips on the water, kayaking excursions in the Muravera area run from the Flumendosa to Portocorallo. Other routes follow the Rio Picocca and Rio Quirra upstream from Feraxi. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between different focuses, including Muravera’s historic sites and museums, the coastal landscape and the river sections.
