Nuragus: Archaeology, Sacred Buildings and Local History

Nuragus is a place where an archaeological landscape, sacred buildings and preserved traces of older settlement areas come together. The archaeological landscape of Nuragus includes around 30 nuraghi. In addition, there are the Pozzo sacro di Coni, the Nuraghe Santu Millanu, churches with different architectural forms, and houses with round-arched portals. Archaeological traces between tower and well

The Nuraghe Santu Millanu preserves a tower built from limestone and standing around six metres high. Traces of the bastion and four corner towers have also survived around the mastio. Another architectural testimony is the Pozzo sacro di Coni, built from basalt blocks in pseudo-isodomic masonry. It stands at the foot of Colle Valenza hill, a little more than one kilometre from Nuragus. Its precise spatial setting is therefore part of the picture, as is the well’s distinctive construction method.

The area around the Nuraghe Santu Millanu and the Pozzo sacro di Coni is associated with the merely presumed Roman and medieval village of Valenza. A bronze object found at the Pozzo sacro di Coni also belongs to this archaeological context: the figure has the form of a praying female figure and is known as the “Praying Matriarch”. The object is currently on display on the ground floor of the National Archaeological Museum of Cagliari.

Churches and Evolving Townscapes

The parish church of Santa Maria Maddalena displays features of late Gothic-Aragonese architecture; its construction is dated to around the 16th century. The rural church of Sant'Elia is divided into three naves, accessed through three portals aligned in the façade. Among the ruins of the medieval church of Santa Maria di Valenza, the single-nave layout and the course of the apse can be identified. Together, these buildings show different forms of sacred architecture and various historical layers of the town.

A view of Nuragus can also be gained through its houses. Several houses preserve round-arched portals behind which courtyards with old cobblestones open up. Such transitions between street, portal and courtyard give the townscape a concrete architectural structure and make details interesting that can easily go unnoticed on a trip without time for close observation.

Religious Tradition and Local Cuisine

From the Middle Ages through the 19th century, the Sant'Elia sanctuary was of great religious importance not only for Nuragus but for the entire surrounding area. The feast of Sant'Elia Profeta is celebrated on 5, 6 and 7 July. At the Sagra de is Tallarinus, there were exhibition stalls offering tastings and sales of typical local products. At the same festival, the preparation of the traditional Nuragus dish was demonstrated.
