Discover Selargius: History, Festivals and Museums

Selargius brings together archaeological traces, sacred buildings and vibrant traditions. At the SEMÙ Museum, you can see finds from the prehistoric pre-Nuragic village of Su Coddu Canelles. The museum is housed in an old building that was also the headquarters of the Cavalleggeri. This provides a starting point for exploring the area at a specific historical site while also leading into eras dating far back in time.

Archaeology and Romanesque Churches

Excavations at the Church of Santa Rosa uncovered finds from the late Punic period of the 3rd century BC, the Republican Roman period of the 2nd century BC and the Late Middle Ages of the 13th and 14th centuries AD. The Romanesque Church of San Giuliano was built between the late 11th and early 12th centuries and remodelled in the 13th century. Selargius therefore places different historical layers at the heart of its cultural exploration.

The Sanctuary of San Lussorio also preserves a special trace of its history: engraved footprints, crosses and letters on the side portal show that the sanctuary was a destination for pilgrimages. The site can therefore be understood not only through its buildings, but also through the signs left by earlier religious routes.

Festivals with Local Traditions

The Antico Sposalizio selargino, also known as sa coja antiga, takes place on the second Sunday of September in the churches and historic centre of Selargius. The combination of churches and historic centre gives this event a clearly local setting. The Gremio of San Lussorio also organises the annual festival of the Church of San Lussorio.

The Antica Sagra di San Lussorio also focused on typical products from Selargius in 2026. That year, it held its 15th tasting event. Further Insights into Selargius

The Selargius City Library displays the permanent exhibition “Casa Putzu: storia di una dimora ottocentesca” in one of its rooms. It complements the archaeological and ecclesiastical history themes with the story of a 19th-century residence and provides another specific way to explore the area’s past.

Planetarium and Visitor Status

The INAF-OAC Planetarium is located at the Astronomical Observatory in Selargius, Via della Scienza 5. The INAF Observatory is closed to visitors until further notice due to ongoing construction work. The INAF-OAC Planetarium is also currently not operating for either school groups or the general public because of construction work at the site. This status is an important practical detail to consider when planning a visit.

The SEMÙ Museum can be reached using various ARST and CTM bus lines. These lines connect Selargius with Cagliari and other nearby municipalities.
